About the role

POSITION SUMMARY: The Senior Manager, Design & Construction is responsible for the management of infrastructure, pre-construction, design and construction projects to ensure the work is performed in conformance with the Company’s construction standards and specific project objectives and requirements. The incumbent will oversee all aspects of construction including design, planning, contracting, construction, commissioning, budgeting and ensuring adherence to local regulations and the Company’s standards. Projects are multi-disciplinary including but not limited to new construction and/or renovations of transfer stations, hauling facilities, maintenance shops, material recovery facilities, rail infrastructure, fueling infrastructure (diesel and CNG) and office buildings/space. The Senior Manager, Design & Construction will work closely with the Operations, Real Estate, Legal, IT, Finance, and Business Development teams to innovate and drive successful projects that create a positive impact to the organization.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and maintains the Company’s construction and design standards. Designs and implements structured hand-off processes and plans for each project, ensuring seamless transitions prior to completion. Partners with multiple functional departments and operational management to plan, oversee and complete construction projects.

  • Establishes effective communication channels to ensure all field and corporate stakeholders remain continuously aligned with project goals and progress. This includes clearly communicating the role and responsibilities of every stakeholder involved in the project, including the Director, Construction Projects, Region Presidents, Area Presidents, General Managers, Procurement, Engineering and Operations VPs.

  • Collaborates with the Sourcing Manager to prepare and distribute monthly status reports, keeping management informed on construction progress, direct and indirect costs, forecasts, and other key project activities. Reviews, approves and updates schedules and maintains historical information through documentation and/or photographs.

  • Advises stakeholders of delays that may affect project profit, costs, schedules and client relations.

  • Develop and monitor project budgets, track costs, and prepare forecasts. Manage change orders and contract modifications, review and approve payments. Identify and mitigate project risks, ensure compliance with contracts and regulations, monitor safety standards and requirements, and resolve project issues. Guide construction activities, including contractor selection, contract negotiations, budget approvals, change orders, procurement methods, scheduling, and subcontractor management.

  • Coaches and develops a team of professionals to assist in their development and attainment of necessary skills to lift performance. Monitors staff performance and drives performance initiatives and ensures that service levels meet or exceed agreed up on standards.

  • This position may require travel by air, car and/or other modes of transportation up to 50% of the time.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with LEED projects and alternative energy projects, preferred.  

  • Ability to read and interpret design plans, construction plans, and contract and subcontract terms and conditions.

  • Ability to lead and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders across all levels of the organization to drive alignment and build trust and credibility.

  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge in the areas of design management, scheduling, budget/cost control, negotiation, and financial reporting.

  • Substantial knowledge of, and experience with, solicitation, negotiation, award and management of design and engineering agreements.

  • Excellent technical writing skills.

  • Knowledge of IBC codes.

  • Proficiency in applicable software (i.e. Bluebeam Studio and MS Office Suite including Excel, PowerPoint.).

  • Knowledge of CPM scheduling practices and familiarity with Primavera P6, MS Project, or Smartsheets.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • 7-10 years of experience in construction project management within the Commercial/Industrial industry.

This position is based at Republic Service's headquarters in Phoenix, AZ. Out of state candidates will be required to relocate in order to be considered for the role.
