POSITION SUMMARY:
As Intercept continues to build its position as the leader in rare and serious liver disease, we are seeking a Senior Director, US Field Medical Affairs. The Senior Director, US Field Medical Affairs is responsible for the development of the vision, strategic and tactical plans; resources and budget plans; and ongoing development and refinement of the US Medical Science Liaison (MSL) team. This is a strategic but hands-on, field-based role. The Senior Director, US Field Medical Affairs oversees the regional field implementation plan and develops, deploys, and monitors key performance indicators. As a member of the Medical Affairs Leadership Team, this role encourages individual professional development goals across the team, drives regional thought leader engagement strategy, fosters scientific exchange, and leads insight generation strategies.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead, manage, mentor, and coach a team of MSLs, maximizing team performance and aligning team activities to US Medical strategic priorities. Ensure scientific and operational excellence of team through hiring, training, and execution of the medical plan
- Implement effective onboarding program for new team members and establish routine team meetings, education, 1:1 mentoring and feedback sessions to create successful team dynamics and individual development
- In partnership with the Commercial organization and HSO team, develop, align and oversee execution of MSL regional and community engagement strategies including new and existing relationships with external thought leaders including but not limited to TLs, large health plans, specialty pharmacies, integrated delivery networks, large group practices, academic institutions, healthcare professionals, academic institutions and professional organizations in the medical community effectively and efficiently and in a compliant and ethical manner
- Ensure timely communication, actionable insights are infused into our strategies, and flawless congress execution
- Build and maintain relationships with US Medical Unit and cross-functional partners (e.g., Clinical Development/Operations, Global Medical, Commercial leadership, etc.), as appropriate to support development and execution of team tactical plan
- Oversee team annual budget cycle and ensure team expenditures are kept within budget and aligned to policies and SOPs
- Build and leverage relationships with key external scientific and medical customers to understand evolving healthcare trends
- Support scientific exchange with key opinion leaders (KOLs), healthcare providers, and external stakeholders
- Partner with Medical Affairs leadership to align field activities with program objectives.
- Work closely with clinical, regulatory, commercial, and market access teams to integrate MSL activities into Intercept business objectives
- Contribute to strategic planning initiatives, including advisory boards, medical education programs, and congress engagement
- Oversee field medical resources, including scientific materials, training programs, and communication tools
- Oversee all aspects of people management with direct reports. This includes, but is not limited to, hiring, career development, training, field visits, performance and compensation management, operating budgets, and coaching for peak performance
- Ensure the MSL team is equipped with appropriate medical scientific information to conduct their activities
- Maintain clinical, scientific, and technical expertise in specific therapeutic area through continuous learning and knowledge of the therapeutic area-related scientific literature and attend and support scientific/professional meetings and conferences
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Advanced medical sciences degree (MD, DO, PharmD, PhD) required
- Minimum of 8 years of medical affairs and/or industry related experience required
- Minimum of 2 years of experience managing field medical teams
- Prior experience in field-based medical role highly preferred
- Experience in gastroenterology/hepatology is a plus
- Operation of a company vehicle is an essential function of the job, and therefore a valid driver’s license issued by the state the driver resides in is required and the driver must meet the Driver Eligibility requirements under Intercept’s Fleet policy
