Akron General’s 9100 Neuroscience Unit is a private 22-bed unit that cares for patients who suffer from strokes, TBI (Traumatic Brain Injuries), spinal cord injuries and s/p craniotomy (after staying in NSICU). As a Patient Care Nursing Assistant (PCNA) on this team, you will perform various tasks, ensuring patients receive frequent attention and feel comfortable, supported and safe throughout treatment. This is a hands-on role that requires a present, attentive and empathetic caregiver who is willing to learn new medical technologies and support patients through some of their most vulnerable moments. On this unit, you will gain a wide variety of skills you can use in advanced positions or other departments within the Cleveland Clinic system.  

 

A caregiver in this position works days from 7:00AM – 3:30PM, including every other weekend and 3 holidays per year.  

 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:   

• Prepare units, patient rooms and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfer or emergencies.  

• Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, feeding, etc. 

• Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight and height.  

• Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck’s traction.   

• Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner.  

• Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge.  

• Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly.  

• Document patient care in the electronic medical record.
