Position Summary

Position provides technical and analytical work in planning, designing, implementing, supporting, and monitoring complex departmental and enterprise database management systems for the business, research, and/or instructional functions of clients. Employee will oversee the migration of database structures from development and QA environments into the production environment, and monitor and manage all environments and report capacity and performance results to management. A strong knowledge of scripting, stored procedures, and query skills are required. Duties include client requirements gathering as well as evaluating hardware availability and software requirements. Additionally, employee will be involved in administration of the databases(s) that support the application code. Employee will either be involved in code, database administration, or a combination of both depending upon the size and complexity of the application portfolio of the entity being supported. Employee will interact with business and application development staff and should be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Leads design of databases for modules of larger projects, monitoring progress to ensure timely completion of deliverables.

  • Helps determine appropriate architecture and other technical solutions and makes relevant recommendations to the project manager or clients.

  • Works closely with project managers and other members of the development team to develop detailed specification documents with clear project deliverables and timelines.

  • Works with clients, project managers and designers in migrations of applications and databases to new environments.

  • Communicates to the project manager with efficiency and accuracy any progress and/or delays.

  • Coordinates with Information Security Office on assessing the risk of the database environments and appropriate controls to protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the information.

  • Tests applications to ensure performance and capacity plans meet expectations, including performing index tuning, query writing and optimization.

  • Designs and develops application database structure, tables, entity relationships and security privileges.

  • Ensures designs make efficient use of network and database resources.

  • Coordinates work with other team members for application development, administration, information security and network administration to ensure that architecture, functionality and design are consistent with all information technology strategies.

  • Researches and evaluates new technology, products, specialized hardware and tools to optimize development and functionality of websites and applications.

  • Applies experience with disaster recovery and data replication techniques to protect departmental information and systems in the event of disaster or data loss.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
