Zego has an exciting opportunity for a Director of Software Engineering to join our team and to support the development of our Payments platform.  The leader applies best practices, communication techniques, collaboration tools and problem-solving approaches to lead the design, development, deployment and support of mission-critical applications and services.  This role will also coordinate and oversee maintenance of existing applications, including managing technical communications with key internal and external stakeholders.

What you’ll do here:

  • Promote engineering excellence across all teams by increasing collaboration, grassroots knowledge sharing and individual learning

  • Unify processes, platforms, technologies, standards and approach across to be in line with the rest of Zego

  • Work closely at all levels of Product Management to ensure proper product planning, team health and timely quality product delivery

  • Collaborate with managerial and technical leads on the development, testing and production release of all new features

  • Ensure timely maintenance activities on all support features

  • Coordinate GRC (governance, regulation and compliance) tasks ensuring timely resolution

  • Collaborates with development and infrastructure teams to define architectural approach, ensure consistency with the agreed architecture, as well as to identify when it is necessary to modify the architecture

  • Devise, implement and monitor, in conjunction with direct reports, plans for decomposing the monoliths and transforming into an event-driven, cloud-native micro-service architecture

  • Conduct performance appraisals, salary reviews, hiring, promotions and career path discussions

  • Derive and track key metrics while ensuring that metrics are not punitive nor judgmental in nature to ensure that they are not gamed

  • Ensure fiscally responsible approaches to engineering functions

  • With product leaders (in both engineering and product team), devise, implement and monitor plans for monolith decomposition as a continuous process

  • Encourage peer-led engineering excellence through more robust peer reviews, group code reviews, interactive discussions, mobbing and office hours.

  • Manage and coordinate the payments technical operations team, ensuring compliant and secure operations with minimal risk 

  • Track tech debt and work with product to continuously reduce existing debt while ensuring our approaches minimize introduced debt

 

 

About you:

  • You can liaise with non-technical teams using terminology, descriptions and analogies that allows them to understand complex issues

  • 5+ years as a leader of software engineering teams, managing departmental processes and interfacing with stakeholders and clients

  • 7+ years of hands-on analysis, software design, development and systems management

  • Experience with modern architecture design paradigms

  • Good project management and product lifecycle skills

  • 5+ years of experience with the Lean/Kanban/Agile development methodology

  • Experience with payments industry standards, money movement, compliance.

  • Experience working with payment processors and partners (such as Lockbox, PayPal, Stripe, Plaid and/or Worldpay)

  • Extremely detail-oriented, creative, dependable and trustworthy, with positive attitude

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced environment

  • Highly self-motivated and self-directed

  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident status required
