Arla Foods Ingredients (AFI) is a leading supplier in dairy nutrition, known for its high level of quality, innovation and food safety. Arla Foods Ingredients is a subsidiary of Arla Foods, a global dairy cooperative owned by dairy farmers. AFI R&D (Research and Development) is primarily located in Nr Vium, Denmark. The microbiology team is part of innovation, but works across the organization, and is closely connected to the Supply Chain and Quality department. The Microbiology team works on dairy processing, analysis, predictive modelling and challenge tests.
Whey and milk are the major materials used for processing at AFI. Whey is the liquid residue of cheese and casein production. Whey ingredients can be used for different applications, including early life nutrition, medical applications, baking, dairy, and sports nutrition. A high microbial quality and safety is required for many whey ingredients.
How you will make an impact
Currently, the Microbiology team consists of three scientists. We have recently agreed with ISI Food protection in Skejby, that we can use their facilities for experiments, and we have a number of experiments and studies, we would like to initiate, with the help from a student assistant.
The work will be planning and executing lab trials primarily at ISI in Skejby together with the scientist in the Micro team and on your own. It is important that you like working in teams and independent in the lab. You should be able to work structured and with an eye for details. Your task will include:
- Setting up lab experiments with a scientist, according to the assigned lab protocol
- Practical work in the laboratory doing plate spreading, counting, ordering supplies, doing heat treatments working with various bacteria.
- Performing Biofilm assays based on various protocols
- Collect data in a structured format
What will make you successful
Your education and experience:
- Preferably you are a MSc undergraduate student that has at least 1 year of study left.
- Training and Experience in microbiology laboratory is necessary
- You could be a student in Food Microbiology, Food Technology and Biotechnology, in Molecular Biology, Molecular Medicine or similar

- Some flexibility is possible with the normal working hours (Monday to Friday 8:00 to 17:00). The work will be 7-15 hours per week spread over 2-3 days, and you will be part of the planning
