About the role
Position Summary
The Server Engineer is a key member of the IT infrastructure team, responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the server infrastructure to ensure the availability and integrity of the Cooperative's physical, virtual, and cloud environments. This role includes proactive capacity management, system updates, disaster recovery planning, and supporting high-level troubleshooting. The Server Engineer works closely with other IT teams to deliver a secure, resilient, and high-performing server environment.
Essential Job Functions
- Server Design and Implementation: Design, implement, and manage server infrastructure, including virtual servers, VDI environments, storage solutions, hypervisors, and disaster recovery systems.
- Windows Administration: Designs advanced Active Directory architectures, deploys complex GPOs, and optimizes DNS and DHCP configurations
- Performance Monitoring: Continuously review and manage the utilization of server and storage resources, performing capacity planning and adjustments to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
- Collaboration and Consultation: Partner with Enterprise Applications and other departments to develop server solutions and assess current and future capacity needs.
- System Upgrades and Patching: Implement updates and patches to server operating systems and applications according to a predetermined maintenance schedule, ensuring minimal disruption and thorough documentation.
- Backup and Recovery: Develop, administer, and monitor backup processes for server data, supporting HQ, disaster recovery (DR) sites, and cloud services like Microsoft O365/SharePoint/OneDrive.
- Security Compliance: Collaborate with Cybersecurity to address vulnerabilities and ensure security compliance across server systems.
- Automation and Scripting: Utilize PowerShell and other automation tools to manage server tasks, enhance efficiency, and support server maintenance.
- User and Access Management: Manage authentication platforms, including on-premises Active Directory, Azure AD, and multi-factor authentication (MFA) solutions like DUO.
- Incident Response and Troubleshooting: Quickly analyze and resolve server and storage system issues, coordinating repair processes for hardware failures and complex problems.
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Create and maintain SOPs for server operations and responsibilities.
- Software Deployment: Automate software deployments to servers and user PCs using tools like Ivanti or equivalent solutions.
- Disaster Recovery Planning: Assist the IT Infrastructure Manager in planning and executing disaster recovery procedures for server and network systems.
- Technical Support: Provide second-level support to the Service Desk and coordinate third-level support with vendors when necessary.
- Participation in Change Management: Actively participate in the Change Advisory Board (CAB) to review and assess the impact of changes on server infrastructure.
Position Requirements
- Education Requirements-
- Bachelor's degree in information systems, IT, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Relevant certifications such as Azure Administrator Associate, VCP-DCV (VMware Certified Professional), Microsoft Certified: Azure Security Engineer Associate
- Experience-
- 3-6 years of relevant experience in systems administration or server management.
- 3 years of experience with VMware (ESXi, vSAN, Horizon) and hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI).
- Experience with data protection solutions like Veeam and Microsoft 365 backup preferred.

- Technical Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of server operating systems, virtualization platforms, backup solutions, and disaster recovery processes.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to assess server performance, troubleshoot technical issues, and implement efficient solutions.
- Collaboration: Strong team player, able to work with cross-functional teams to meet server infrastructure needs.
- Automation: Proficient in PowerShell scripting and automation tools for server management.
- Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively document processes and convey information to non-technical stakeholders.
