Senior Counsel / Assistant General Counsel

Role summary

OhmConnect is seeking an experienced lawyer to help build its legal team and provide sound, practical and actionable legal advice and business leadership.

This position will report to the General Counsel and will be an instrumental member of the legal team. This role includes work in the traditional in-house portfolio (negotiating commercial agreements, managing corporate matters, supporting all departments and functions with legal review and advice, managing risk and disputes), as well as on broader strategic issues and issues of first impression. It requires a broad understanding of corporate, commercial, intellectual property, privacy, transactional, compliance, employment, and litigation matters. This position will work closely with leaders of other departments to achieve business objectives, mitigate risks, and meet legal obligations.

This is an ideal role for an in-house generalist with strong leadership skills to partner with the General Counsel to optimize the legal function in an innovative, mission-driven company. We have a strong preference for someone based in or near the San Francisco Bay Area, and some domestic travel will be required for this position.

What you will do

• Provide timely, pragmatic legal advice to all departments, including Business Development, Product, Engineering, Marketing, Customer Experience, Finance and HR to achieve business objectives
• Review, negotiate and advise on a wide range of commercial agreements
• Advise company leadership on legal considerations around strategic business decisions and support negotiations of transactions
• Build the company’s compliance program and strengthen related policies, and oversee regulatory compliance and risk management
• Help effectively manage outside counsel’s delivery of legal services
• Manage the company’s IP protection initiatives and advise on IP issues
• Manage the company’s privacy program and advise on privacy issues
• Assist with compliance filings and submissions in regulatory proceedings
• Manage special projects as required to support the business

Requirements

• JD from an accredited law school and admitted to practice law in good standing, preferably in California
• 6+ years of practicing law, including experience at a law firm and at least two years of in-house experience
• 3+ year of related work experience, ideally including in the clean energy industry
• High-caliber, solution-oriented lawyer who is business-minded and pragmatic
• Strategic and results-driven, proactive and resourceful
• Self-starter who is at home in a fast-paced, high-growth and informal environment where demands and priorities can change rapidly
• Exceptional judgment, appropriately balancing risk with corporate objectives
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, including ability to manage high volume of workstreams
• Comfortable working both in teams and independently, and being hands-on
• Superior interpersonal skills, including proven ability to build strong relationships and gain trust across an organization
• Intellectual curiosity and a willingness to take on new challenges to achieve business objectives
• Growth mindset and a sense of humor
