Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, SWCC offers associate’s degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. SWCC also has associate’s degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.

Southwest Community College invites applications for hourly clinical instructors for the Practical Nursing Program in the Health Technologies Division.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Becomes knowledgeable of program goals clinical objectives, and clinical evaluation systems.
  • Provides students with appropriate and adequate clinical supervision.
  • Provides students with appropriate and adequate clinical instruction.
  • Performs clinical competency evaluation for each student assigned to their supervision
  • Proffers a positive professional attitude toward students and the teaching process.
  • Participates in continuing education to improve and maintain competence in evaluation skills.
  • Meets regularly with program officials to communicate student progress, strengths, and weaknesses.
  • Assists in maintaining student clinical records.
  • Maintains confidentiality in accordance with program policy.
  • May participate in the designated student selection process for entry into the program.
  • Participates in meeting and serves on committees consistent with the goals of the educational program
  • May be required to travel to various clinical sites

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Shall hold a current license or multistate licensure privilege to practice nursing in Virginia as a registered nurse with no disciplinary action that restricts the practice of nursing
  • Shall at a minimum have two years of direct client care experience as a registered nurse
  • Shall have all of the requirements to meet the required guidelines for the clinical area in which they are supervising students
  • A baccalaureate degree, preferably in nursing, or an associate degree in nursing and be actively enrolled in a baccalaureate degree for nursing program
  • Shall possess a current American Heart Association BCLS card
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to build successful relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates outstanding conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrates effective time management and prioritization of work.
  • Demonstrates excellence in organization and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrates effective computer skills (e.g., software, analytical, report writing).
  • Demonstrates clinical competency and compliance with professional standards of practice.
  • Able to work effectively under pressure and to meet deadlines.
  • Able to develop a professional rapport with diverse stakeholders.
  • Able to develop and complete projects without continuous direct supervision.
