ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center (“Vaughn”), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 25 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district’s low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent. 

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Medical Assistant at Vaughn Next Century Learning Center provides essential health support to students, ensuring their well-being and safety throughout the school day. This role involves delivering direct care, assisting with medication administration, supporting students with mobility or personal care needs, and responding to minor medical incidents. The Medical Assistant works under the guidance of the School Nurse to follow individualized health plans for students with disabilities or specialized medical needs.

In addition to hands-on care, the Medical Assistant maintains accurate health records, conducts routine screenings, and monitors immunizations in compliance with California requirements. The role requires clear communication with families, staff, and administration, supporting collaborative efforts to address student health concerns promptly.

The Medical Assistant also contributes to schoolwide operations, including participation in emergency protocols, maintaining a safe and organized health office, and performing administrative duties related to student health. Success in this role requires strong organizational skills, knowledge of medical assistant practices, and the ability to provide compassionate care to a diverse student population, while upholding confidentiality and supporting the school’s mission and vision.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Health Support

• Provide daily health support to students, including monitoring vital signs, assisting with medication administration per written physician orders, and supporting students with personal care and hygiene needs.
• Assist students with mobility challenges, including use of wheelchairs, walkers, or crutches, and provide physical support as needed.
• Respond to minor medical incidents or emergencies calmly and effectively; escalate serious medical concerns to the School Nurse or physician.
• Support students with disabilities as assigned, following individualized health and care plans.

Health Monitoring & Documentation

• Maintain and organize student medical records, including documenting care provided, communication with families, and observations of student health.
• Ensure student immunizations are current according to California requirements and notify families of follow-up needs.
• Conduct routine health screenings (vision, hearing, height/weight, temperature checks) and report findings to the School Nurse or administration.
• Monitor and maintain health office supplies and medical equipment, ensuring readiness for daily care and emergencies.

Collaboration & Communication

• Communicate student health concerns promptly to the School Nurse, administration, and families, ensuring proper follow-up and care coordination.
