Porter/ Maintenance Worker (Long Island City) Part-Time

The Porter / Maintenance Worker is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and overall appearance of school facilities, providing efficient & effective caretaking support to our properties.  This includes ensuring that the security and general appearance of the facility and surrounding areas are maintained in accordance with Company standards.  This includes performing maintenance tasks such as furniture assembly, painting, minor plumbing repairs and carpentry, as well as cleaning restrooms, classrooms, and common areas.

The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, a high level of attention to detail, be mechanically skilled, be able to work independently, and possess a positive attitude.  This position is part-time Monday-Friday 11:00am – 5:00pm (27.5 net hours per week)

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance

• Assemble & move furniture / equipment
• Classroom & event setup / breakdown
• Minor repairs, such as patching & painting walls, unclogging toilets, fixing leaks, repairing furniture,
• Responding to on-site Facilities emergencies
• Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems
• Conducting periodic inventories of supplies & equipment
• Responsible for all preventative maintenance
• Assist with deliveries & general porter duties as needed
• Daily opening & closing of facility when required
• Clear walkways and steps of building and surrounding areas of snow and ice in the event of inclement weather.  Spread rock salt, sand or other materials to ensure staff and student safety

Custodial / Janitorial:

• Clean & sanitize restrooms
• Sweep, mop, and scrub floors
• Dust & wipe down all horizontal surfaces
• Empty trash & recycle bins; flatten all cardboard boxes
• Clean windows (interior), doors, and mirrors

Safety:

• Secure the building daily by shutting off lights, do walk through the entire building to ensure all windows are closed and secured at the end of shift.
• Adhere to all safety regulations & procedures
• Use appropriate safety equipment and personal protective equipment

 Requirements

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Minimum 3 years’ experience in maintenance and/or commercial cleaning
• Excellent communication skills
• Must possess a cell phone and must be comfortable sending / receiving emails
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Must be a “self-starter” who will be proactive in maintaining & cleaning the facility
• Must have mechanical aptitude, knowledge of hand & power tools a plus
• Competent at basic building repairs and maintenance
• Must be able to lift and carry heavy objects up to 75#.  Ability to move freely throughout building without restrictions.
• Able to work indoor / outdoor in a variety of weather conditions
• Must be willing to work overtime as needed
• Participate in a weekly Facilities conference call with managers
• Ability to be on your feet for extended periods of time.
