We currently have an opening for a Machine Shop Front Line Manager at our facility in Mount Vernon, Indiana for the Weekend Shift (Friday, Saturday and Sunday/12 hours). Our team in Mount Vernon, Indiana is growing!  Do you have experience with manual and/or CNC machining operations?  Have you successfully lead small teams of machinists?  Our machinists in Mount Vernon have the opportunity to work on large-scale CNC vertical turning centers, multi-axis CNC horizontal boring mills, and smaller CNC lathes and mills to machine one-of-a-kind precision components for naval nuclear reactors used in submarines and aircraft carriers.

We are looking for a qualified supervisor to lead and mentor a team of machinists on our weekend shift (Friday thru Sunday).  This is a low-volume, highly-engineered manufacturing environment, and you’d be involved in the full life cycle of the build.  Additionally, you’ll get to work in a safe, clean, and highly-specialized environment alongside a great team of skilled colleagues.

 

Job Responsibilities: 

 

• Directly supervise and support +/- 10 machinists spanning two shifts and oversight of weekend volunteers.
• Practice visible leadership on the floor providing technical oversight of work through observations and floor surveillance.

• Lead daily start-up meetings reviewing machine assignments and site communication.
• Provide pass down notes to assist start-up of following shift and communicate with weekday supervisors.

• Ensure timely availability of required materials for the operations being performed.
• Perform pre-work activities including review of process plan, part drawings, machine setup and safety concerns.

• Maintain structured on-the-job training logs for each machinist.
• Participate in and promote Kaizen events and encourage process improvement using Lean principles.
• Promote and support good housekeeping and organization at each machine.

• Manage employee performance through the evaluation of expectations and objectives, including safe working practices, quality of work, compliance to procedures, and productivity.

• Coach machinists on unacceptable performance.

• Manages employee attendance and production records through electronic systems.

• Encourages a questioning attitude to ensure a safe work environment and the highest quality standards.

• Works closely with engineering to develop/modify processes to optimize machining productivity/performance.
• Accountable to achieving and driving unit metrics within the team through adherence to standards and innovative problem solving.
• The job will start with training on day shift and then transition to a three (3) day weekend schedule, twelve (12) hour shifts, Friday through Sunday. The pay will be for forty hours, three days per week.

 

Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent along with a minimum of two (2) years of Front Line Manager experience in a manufacturing environment is required.  Front Line Manager experience includes but is not limited to, leading teams, assigning individual work, performance management, and coaching/mentoring employees.
