Senior Software Engineer - Control Systems

NOTE: You must currently reside within a commutable distance to one of Fastly's US offices to be considered for this position.

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with experience developing highly-available, reliable software systems. We are a team of backend engineers that are focused on customer configuration management and propagation to the edge. The services we own are central to Fastly’s customer configuration support, so this role involves working with numerous Fastly teams and having an impact on critical business initiatives. As a distributed team, we employ a variety of styles to get our work done. We put a high value on working collaboratively, at times asynchronously, while also utilizing remote pairing and code/design walkthroughs.

Our tech stack includes Perl, Rust, Go and MySQL.

Work Location(s) & Travel Requirements:

This hybrid position will be based out of one of Fastly’s US office locations - New York, NY; Denver, CO; San Francisco, CA; or Los Angeles, CA.  Fastly's hybrid model allows employees flexibility to split their time between the office and home. 

This position may require travel as required by your role or requested by your manager.

What You'll Do

• Contribute to the design of systems that have a direct impact on how customers manage their configuration, and run their services on Fastly
• Support and deploy applications written in Perl, and interact with several teams within the organization
• Collaborate with your teammates through code and design reviews
• Anticipate, design, and build for the continued reliability and scaling needs of the Fastly Control Systems
• Participate in on-call rotation
• Contribute to the core infrastructure and platform needs of the team by working with tools and frameworks like Terraform, Jenkins and Chef

Work Hours:

• This position will require you to be available during core business hours.
• Occasional night and weekend work will be required as needed for on-call support rotation

What We're Looking For

Basic Qualifications:

• Hands-on experience developing applications in one of the following languages Perl, Rust or C++
• Understanding of best principles for system design 
• You are eager to learn new domains, grow your skills, and move up the stack
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• A great teammate: communicative, collaborative, empathetic
• You have experience working with teams distributed across different time zones

Preferred Qualifications:

• Building, analyzing, profiling, or debugging large-scale distributed systems
• API development
• Caching
• Varnish

Salary

The estimated salary range for this position is $132,060 to $194,210.

Starting salary may vary based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, and location.

This role may be eligible to participate in Fastly’s equity and discretionary bonus programs.
