Sheet Metal Mechanic is a nonsupervisory position involved in the repair, fabrication, modification, and installation of sheet metal parts, items, and assemblies. The Sheet Metal Mechanic must possess knowledge of the physical properties and working characteristics of sheet metal, knowledge of tools and equipment required in the sheet metal trade, and the knowledge of shop mathematics and principles.
A Sheet Metal Mechanic is provided written or oral instructions, blueprints, or sketches of the item or system to be manufactured, installed, or repaired. Sheet Metal Mechanics make personal inspections of the work to be done. Under the supervision of a Sheet Metal Journeyman they select and use materials and machines most appropriate for the assigned project including screwing, riveting, soldering, and welding for appearance as well as strength. A Sheet Metal Journeyman or Foreman will check the completed work for quality and accuracy and provides assistance on unusual problems when requested.
Primary Purpose:
Fabricates, assembles, installs, and repairs sheet metal equipment, products and structures.
Typical Duties:
Selects gauge and type of sheet metal appropriate to the products being fabricated or installed. Help set up or operate soldering and welding equipment, fabricating machines, etc. Load, transport, and unload materials, tools, equipment and supplies. May erect scaffolding; interpret specifications, blue prints and work orders as needed to perform a task; install sheet metal assemblies in a building or work site.
Job Requirements:
With minimal direction and supervision from an experienced Sheet Metal Journeyman, you should be able to:
- Follow specific directions.
- Perform a variety of duties that may often change.
- Work within established standards of accuracy.
- Repeat tasks of short duration according to a set procedure.
- Evaluate information using measurable standards.
- Plan, layout, fabricate, assemble, install and repair sheet metal parts, equipment and products, utilizing a knowledge of working characteristics of metallic and nonmetallic materials, machining, and layout techniques.
- Use hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment.
- Read and interpret blue prints, sketches, or product specifications to determine the sequence and methods of fabricating, assembling and installing sheet metal products.
- Select gauge and type of sheet metal such as galvanized, iron, copper, stainless steel, steel or aluminum.
- Use nonmetallic materials such as plastics or fiberglass, according to product specifications.
- Layout and mark dimensions and reference lines on materials using scribers, dividers, squares and rulers.
- Apply knowledge of shop mathematics and layout techniques to develop and trace patterns (use templates).
- Set up and operate fabricating machines such as shears, brakes, presses, etc. to cut, bend, form or straighten materials.
- Trim, file, grind, de-bur, buff and smooth surfaces, using hand tools or portable power tools.
- Weld, solder, bolt, rivet, screw, clip, caulk, and bond component parts to assemble products, using hand tools, power tools and equipment.
- Install assemblies in a supportive framework according to blue prints, using hand tools, portable power tools and lifting and handling devices.
- Inspect assemblies and installation for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments required.
- Repair and maintain sheet metal products.
- Maintain appropriate safety training certifications.
General Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Driver’s License
- Successful documented completion of 8000 hours as a Sheet Metal Apprentice is required.
- Other on-the-job and related training may also be required.
Physical Demands
Must be able to:
- Stand or walk for long periods of time during a regular workday.
- Use hands and arms to reach for, handle and manipulate objects.
- Lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Climb up and down ladders, scaffolds, stairs, and other climbing devices.
- Carry tools and equipment.
- Work while in stooped, kneeling, crouched, and crawling positions.
- Be able to see naturally or with correction, to safely perform designated tasks.
