Maintaining a healthy, safe, and fit workplace is paramount to our mission. The occupational health nurse’s (OHN’s) role is essential to keep workers healthy and to prevent work-related injuries. To ensure the medical readiness of the workforce, the nurse provides direct care to employees on the job, participates in health promotion activities, and advocates for health promotion and risk reduction. This position requires the skill set and ability to perform OHN functions in an autonomous environment, administratively and clinically.
The OHN is responsible for the case management of all occupational and non-occupational injury/illness requiring follow-up care. Provide oversight for the administrative components of the Human Reliability Program (HRP) medical and psychological processes.
In this role, you will also respond to routine, work-related illnesses, injuries, and medical emergencies and provide employee health promotion activities and education. The role requires providing direct patient care according to the guidelines established by Occupational Medicine and within the scope of their nursing license.
- Provide nursing care to personnel utilizing occupational health services.
- Promote and actively participate in the DOE and M&O contractor safety concept.
- Demonstrate and enforce environment, safety, health, and quality leadership.
- Emphasize the safety of each employee, and the protection of equipment and property in areas of responsibility.
- Take immediate action to correct reported or observed unacceptable environment, safety, health and quality conditions and/or behaviors.
- Support and encourage employee participation in all DOE and M&O contractor environment, safety, health, and quality initiatives.
- Follow guidelines in Department of Energy (DOE) Code of Federal Regulations (CFRs).
- Maintain knowledge of Occupational Medicine functions and operating procedures including the established policies and accountability standards.
- Oversee the case management of all occupational and non-occupational injuries/illnesses and works with representatives from Legal, Safety, and third-party administrators regarding case status and referrals. Schedule and follow up with referrals.
- Screen and provide duty status notification for basic return to work evaluations consulting with the clinical staff for guidance as necessary.
- Act as liaison in coordinating psychological and medical evaluations between Occupational Medicine and the administrators of the Human Reliability Program (HRP).
- Screen employees to make sure they are fit to complete the duties designated for their position. This can include drug and alcohol screening, lab draws, physical examinations, hearing tests, vision tests, spirometry, electrocardiograms, and immunizations.
- Provide health promotion activities within the scope of directives and accepted standards of occupational nursing practice. Activities cover areas such as health and wellness, travel medicine, nutrition, as well as disease specific topics.
- Triage and evaluate employees presenting to the clinic for all illnesses and injuries. Provide first aid and emergency care as appropriate.
- Perform daily and periodic calibration and of medical equipment according to manufacture and other regulatory guidelines, while also documenting, and coordinating the calibration, preventative maintenance, and repair of all medical equipment.
