Job Description
The Certified Medical Assistant I reports to the Health Service Administrator. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Certified Medical Assistant performs multi-skilled activities to support a decentralized patient-centered approach to patient care and achieve desired outcomes within a correctional institution.
Assists in the examination and treatment of inmates under the direction of a physician. Responsibilities include:
• Interviewing inmates and measuring vital signs (pulse, temperature, blood pressure, weight, height).
• Recording or entering medical information into the inmate’s medical record.
• Conducting medical intake screenings as part of the booking or admission process when required.
• Preparing treatment rooms for examination of patients in accordance with security guidelines. • Maintaining awareness of and adhering to facility security procedures, including tool/sharps control, escort requirements, and behavioral precautions.
• Working collaboratively with correctional officers to ensure safe movement of inmates to and from the medical unit.
• Responding to medical emergencies within the facility as directed by nursing or medical leadership.
Minimum Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Completion of an accredited medical assisting program with one year of patient care experience preferred. Experience in a correctional health environment is helpful but not required.
Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations
•Must be certified through the American Medical Technologist (AMT) or American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or National Health career Association (NHA) or MedCA as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP).•Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.•Additional Job Description
