Work Designation. Depending on your location within the continental US, this role may be remote.

  • If you live within 50 miles of the Aflac offices located in Columbus, GA, Columbia, SC, or NY this role will be hybrid. This means you will be expected to work in the office for at least 60% of the work week. You will work from your home (within the continental US) for the remaining portion of the work week. Details of this schedule will be discussed with your leadership. 
  • If you live more than 50 miles from the Aflac offices located in Columbus, GA or Columbia, SC, or NY this role will be remote. This means you will be expected to work from your home, within the continental US. If the role is remote, there may be occasions that you are requested to come to the office based on business need. Any requests to come to the office would be communicated with you in advance.

What does it take to be successful in this role?

  • Thorough, comprehensive and current understanding of US GAAP and US Statutory accounting and financial reporting principles
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a fluid environment 
  • Strong technical accounting research skills 
  • Ability to serve as a managerial advisor on professional and technical issues with a view toward reaching strategic decisions 
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized with the ability to work on multiple projects with different deadlines 
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and project management skills with emphasis on effective multitasking 
  • Excellent presentation, oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills to effectively interact with senior management, internal and external stakeholders and partners

Education & Experience Required

  • Bachelor's Degree Accounting, finance or a related discipline
  • Certified Public Accountant license
  • Eight years of experience in Accounting Policy or Advisory
  • Strong experience with US GAAP and US Statutory accounting rules for these areas including, but not limited to, insurance, reinsurance, business combinations, leases, stock-based compensation, revenue recognition, goodwill & intangible assets, foreign currency transactions/translation, taxes, financial instruments including investments, securities, derivatives, transfers of financial instruments)
  • SEC reporting related experience

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

 

Education & Experience Preferred

  • Experience with or exposure to Japan and JGAAP
  • Public accounting experience

  • Less than or equal to 25%

 

 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervises or performs technical accounting research and provides interpretation of ambiguous and complex accounting literature to address technical accounting questions related to new and existing insurance products, reinsurance transactions, as well as financial instruments including investments, securities, derivatives and special projects 
  • Actively addresses technical accounting issues stemming from the changing business needs of Aflac; documents decisions in memos, executive summaries, and financial accounting policies 
  • Monitors changes in US GAAP, IFRS, US Statutory, and JGAAP that would potentially affect the financial reporting process and business of Aflac; drafts comment letters in response to the exposure drafts for submission to various regulatory bodies; models impact of the propos
