A Glimpse of the Job

The Facilities, Safety, and Support Services Manager is responsible for managing and supervising complex units within Environmental Health and Safety. The position is responsible for all fire and life safety programs, built environment code compliance, and the operational fire and life safety program, air quality and environmental sampling, and the campus hazardous waste management program. The Manager administers all employee and/or student safety training and assists in annually reviewing and updating as necessary the EHS Safety Manual and Laboratory Safety Manual. Finally, the Manager oversees the TAMUG Blood borne Pathogen program and leads all safety incident investigations and review.

Essential Duties/Tasks:

  • Fire and Life Safety Inspections - With a primary focus on fire and life safety, conducts primary and follow-up safety inspections and maintains records on code compliance for campus facilities. Issues permits and conducts site inspections for events and various functions. Monitors Emergency Blue Phone Status on campus and performs maintenance as required. Trains and supervises office staff to conduct required inspections.

  • Safety Inspections - Performs and oversees laboratory and shop inspections and submits all associated reports and records. With a primary focus on laboratories, shops, office occupational health and safety, and construction site safety, conducts primary and follow-up safety inspections and maintains records on code compliance for campus facilities. Oversees and coordinates laboratory safety program, including developing lab specific guidelines. Coordinates lab start-up and decommissioning. Obtains fume hood inspection reports and inspects for compliance. Oversees and/or assists employees in obtaining safety data sheets. Performs indoor air quality (IAQ), mold investigations and Asbestos testing. Trains and supervises office staff to conduct required inspections.

  • Construction/Renovation/Code Compliance - Coordinates fire and life safety plan distribution and comments collection for new renovation projects. Oversees programs to develop and manage safe construction programs. Generates applicable reports and recommendations regarding system acceptance, punch lists, and project closeouts. Attends and assigns personnel to attend meetings at various stages of design, construction, and acceptance of systems for new construction and renovation projects. Coordinates with program managers and supervisors to distribute information and gather comments for review and acceptance.

  • Hazardous Waste Management Program - Oversees the pick-up and disposal of hazardous waste.

  • Safety Education - Creates and conducts training for all employees in areas of fire and life safety. Manages the building emergency coordinator program. Conducts regular building evacuation drills. Assigns training and reviews tasks of personnel to ensure compliance with codes and standards. Oversees the TAMUG Blood borne Pathogen program. Updates as necessary the EHS Safety Manual and Laboratory Safety Manual.

  • Data and Reporting - Generates applicable reports that summarizes the results of building and safety inspections related to fire and life safety. Enters data and produces a summary of findings, deficiencies and outlines corrective actions and completion dates for re-inspection and makes recommendations regarding system acceptance, punch lists, and project closeouts. Ensures all records are appropriately maintained and secured and provides applicable reports.

  • Emergency Response and Other - Responds to emergencies, accidents, or incidents, as necessary and be on call for up to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Assists other emergency personnel as needed. Drives a university or other motor vehicle to respond to emergencies on campus. Performs other duties as assigned.
