As a Safety Specialist, you will partner with employees and management of Tilcon Connecticut Inc. to coordinate, support, and actively promote safety engagement across different lines of business.  You will establish key internal relationships to ensure that safety continues to be embedded within the culture of our Company.  You will report directly to the Health & Safety Manager.  This role is expected to spend roughly 75% of the time providing safety support in the field. 

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Engage with and be a safety resource for employees in the field on a daily basis.
  • Manage DOT compliance.
  • Maintain close working relationship with supervisors to advise them in all aspects of occupational safety.
  • Trains, coaches, and performs safety inspections to ensure high safety standards. Observes behaviors and conditions within the work environment on a frequent basis and coaches employees regarding the value of working safely.
  • Responsible for coordinating and tracking, pre-employment drug, alcohol and medical testing and random drug and alcohol testing for DOT and non-DOT employees.
  • Help coordinate Health & Safety reporting requirements including filing OSHA logs, general liability, auto and Workers Compensation claims and maintain required files.
  • Serve as an internal resource for all Tilcon Connecticut, Inc. supervisors and employees for safety-related questions and issues.
  • Develops, revises, and implements work practices and programs that enhance employee performance in a safe manner.
  • Develops, coordinates, and conducts new hire, refresher, and specialized training with all business units.
  • Provides input and conducts projects to develop and update procedures and safety rules as required.
  • Actively participate and/or lead safety committee meetings.
  • Manage Weekly Tasks: update incident summary, attend incident review meetings and safety department conference calls
  • Assist the H&S Manager with the implementation of OSHA and MSHA compliance programs as well as CRH Americas Materials programs at all sites.
  • Frequent travel to facilities and various work sites throughout Connecticut is required.
  • Help order supplies for Training Room, Safety Supply room, and Safety Building
  • Participates in special projects or other tasks as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • B.A. degree in Health, Safety, or related degree, and 1-2 years of Health and Safety experience preferred
  • GSP preferred
  • Valid State driver’s license required

 

Work Requirements

  • Desired: 1-2 or more years’ experience in Health & Safety position and/or recent graduate with bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety or related field within our industry.
  • Construction industry experience desired.
  • Ability to travel to other worksites throughout the state of Connecticut as needed.

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Proactive approach.
  • Demonstrates well-developed analytical and problem solving abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to diplomatically handle challenging situations.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Demonstrated competence in obtaining, analyzing, disseminating, and reporting safety information in compliance with applicable regulations.
