Undergraduate Admissions Application Reader

 

Application readers are part-time, seasonal positions in Duke University’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Application readers perform a holistic review of undergraduate applications utilizing established standards and guidelines. 

 

Readers work a minimum of 20 hours per week and up to 40 hours per week from mid-October through March. All application evaluation is web-based. This is primarily a remote position with occasional required in-person commitments. These are part-time, seasonal positions that require annual reappointments. 
 

Residency Requirement: 

 

University policy does not allow us to employ hourly-paid staff whose permanent residence is outside North Carolina. 

 

Work performed: 

 

Readers perform a holistic review of student applications for admission to Duke University; analyze the qualifications of prospective students using established University admissions standards; submit evaluations and assessments to the staff of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. 

 

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Qualifications: 

•    A bachelor’s degree is required.

•    Prior experience evaluating applications for highly selective schools is preferred. Previous experience in higher education, secondary school, community-based organization, or other educational settings is welcome. 
•    Must reside in North Carolina and have a North Carolina home address. 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

•    Ability to synthesize information and work efficiently with excellent attention to detail. 
•    Must demonstrate a high level of discretion and confidentiality. 
•    Can prioritize work effectively, adhere to deadlines, and implement suggestions from feedback. 
•    Comfort with learning and navigating technology. 
•    Attend all required in-person and virtual meetings and trainings during the application review period. 
•    Must have reliable high-speed internet access and access to a private work location. 
•    Appreciate the wide range of talents, backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives represented in Duke’s applicant pool. 
•    Candidates must be self-directed and able to work independently.

•    Parents, guardians, or immediate family members of a high school junior or senior, regardless of whether they plan to apply to Duke. 
•    Current admission professionals, such as high school counselors and independent consultants. 
•    Employees or volunteers for any other undergraduate educational institution.
