Atlantic Health System is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to head the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Morristown Medical Center (MMC). Morristown Medical Center has been named a top 50 Hospital in Orthopedics by US News and World Report consecutively for the past 10 years, along with several other surgical disciplines.
This critical role drives patient care, safety, quality clinical outcomes, and academic excellence while also ensuring optimal operational and financial performance. Responsibilities include upholding high standards of clinical management, participating in committees to enhance services, and collaborating with other clinical leaders across the health system to share best practices.
The Chair will dedicate 40% of their time to clinical practice, while ensuring alignment with departmental goals and serving as a key liaison between the medical staff and administration. Effective oversight and leadership of the orthopedic residency program will be critical.
Responsibilities of the Chair of Orthopedics include:
- Patient Care – Drive quality, patient safety and clinical outcomes. Oversee quality/clinical management to meet patient needs. Participate on committees to improve quality and enhancement of services. Maintain clinical credibility and visibility. Collaborate with other campuses to share best practices and support continuum of care. Assume responsibility for all CQI endeavors for the Department in collaboration with the CMO and the Quality Department.
- Clinical Practice - Maintain a clinical practice consistent with the duties of the position and goals of the Department.
- Physician Relations – Act as liaison between employed/voluntary medical staff and administration. Represent constituent’s ideas, recommendations, desires and needs. Promotes collegiality and aligns physicians with AHS. Assist in the recruitment, retention and development of high quality clinical and administrative leaders. Report at each Medical Executive Committee meeting the activities of the department and cooperate with leaders of other departments in matters involving interdepartmental interests and decision. Assure compliance by the attending staff with the policy of 24/7 coverage of the Hospital for surgical and trauma services.
- Patient Experience – Engage and support patient experience programs and practices.
- Business Development – Develop plans to grow the business, assures program development and acquires required equipment, technologies and facilities. Participate in the planning and supervision of construction and renovation in areas related to the department. Identify and assess the latest technologies and procedures to position the department as a leader regionally and nationally. Involved in resources management including people and finances. Make recommendations as may be required for supplies, equipment, and facilities.
- Strategic Planning – Participate in developing and implementing strategic goals. Work with Foundation to solicit donations. Work with AHS Media Relations on marketing of Department. Ensures Department is actively involved in community education and scientific programs. Understands and communicates trends in the marketplace. Provide environmental scans in and outside of NJ. Develop a vision for the department.
- Talent Management – Manage, develop and motivate staff. Participate in developing reward and recognition programs for physicians and other staff. Oversee performance of staff, set goals, and deliver feedback. Develop balance scorecard, including data and metrics. Participate in recruitment, retention and development of staff and succession planning. Oversee the supervision of the medical records of the Department for adequacy, quality and promptness of completion.
- Medical Program Development – Play a leading role in medical program development. Review, revise, create and enforce rules and regulations for the Department in collaboration with the departmental advisory committee and the CMO. Enforce the Hospital and Medical Staff by-laws and rules and regulations in the Department of Orthopedics. Make recommendations to the Credentials Committee regarding privileges for members of the Department. Evaluate and collaborate with AHS Legal in matters involving physicians and disciplinary issues. Arrange and maintain the organization of the department so as to provide adequate supervision and evaluation of the clinical work of the department. Serve on committees as appropriate for MMC.
- Education – Oversee educational activities. Promote education of Medical Staf
