WSP, an award winning and innovative multi-disciplinary consulting firm is seeking a Jr. Structural Staff Engineer to join the structural engineering practice within our Architectural Engineering (A/E) business based in Portland, Maine.
The role of the Junior Structural Engineer is to work within multidisciplinary teams of engineers, and designers on building projects with an emphasis on engineering. As a junior structural engineer, you will be working on specific engineering and design tasks under the supervision of a senior structural engineer and or designer. The nature and progression of the assignments and the level of responsibilities will depend on your performance and willingness to grow. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are expected. Ability to self-direct and to independently research technical solutions are encouraged. The position will primarily work in an office/home office setting but may require travel to client facilities.
Our Portland A/E Team provides technical solutions for challenging projects and complex design problems, with a focus towards sustainable, resilient, and energy efficient solutions for our clients. Our projects include assessments, forensic analysis, renovation, and new construction in the industrial, municipal, federal, and commercial sectors. Your Impact
- Analyze new and existing structures per required code.
- Develop calculation packages and construction drawings as required, under the guidance of senior engineers and designers.
- Perform site visits of existing structures to evaluate their capacity and ability to resist new loading requirements; produce technical reports with technically sound recommendations.
- Be able to use engineering fundamentals to solve seemingly complex problems.
- Be able to present and describe engineering solutions and concept competently to both technical and non-technical audience.
- Develop structural models to solve engineering problems based on sound engineering principles.
- Work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Adhere to our project delivery standards, including self-checking work prior to quality control reviews, to ensure a high quality of work is consistently delivered.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or related field.
- 1 to 3 years of relevant post education experience.
- EIT or Eligible to sit for the Fundamental of Engineering (FE) exam.
- Solid understanding of structural fundamentals required.
- Familiarity building codes including seismic and wind requirements.
- Knowledge with wood, concrete, steel and masonry.
- Familiarity with Revit and/or willingness and ability to learn.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite.
- Familiarity with a structural analysis software such as STAAD PRO, ETABS or RISA and/or willingness and ability to learn.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to create and interpret sketches, drawings, and various structures
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Ability to effectively meet deadlines.
