Job Family Definition:

This family may span multiple research and engineering disciplines. Working within Hewlett Packard Labs, initiates the investigation, design, development, execution, and implementation of scientific research projects. Applies scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions and innovation for the company products, services and solutions. Plans and executes research in support of established research agenda. May coordinate organizational and research efforts, across single or multiple labs and disciplines. Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art research and engineering principles and theories. May contribute to scientific literature and conferences, and may participate in development of patent applications. Participates in activities to establish thought leadership, intellectual property (IP), and technical influence internal and external to the company.

Responsibilities:

  • Leads a team of other research engineers carrying out the investigation, design, development, execution, and implementation of scientific research projects to generate new products, technologies, and intellectual property.
  • As principal or co-principal investigator, designs overall research plan, including resource allocations, investigative procedures, and data guidelines, for a research project or program.
  • Reviews and evaluates research plans, experimental designs, and project activities in accordance with research guidelines and standards; provides tangible feedback to improve research quality, scientific rigor, and ease of technology transfer.
  • Identifies and evaluates new technologies, innovations, and external partner relationships for alignment with research roadmap and potential business value; creates plans for integration and update into research and product architecture.
  • Represents the company at industry and scientific conferences and meetings; prepares and delivers literature and presentations for publication and peer review; creates patent applications and supporting documentation.
  • Leverages recognized domain expertise, businessacumen, and experience to influence decisions of executive business leadership, outsourced manufacturing and development partners, and industry standards groups.
  • Provides guidance and mentoring to less- experienced staff members to set an example of research engineering innovation and excellence.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's, Master's or PHD degree in Computer Science or Engineering or equivalent
  • Typically 10+ years experience, including graduate or postgraduate research

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience designing and developing scientific design and data collection methodologies, tools and analysis packages to collect, validate, and analyze research data.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Applying and conducting reviews of research plans, experimental designs, scientific procedures and processes, and data analysis.
  • Evaluating and selecting forms of scientific analysis, modeling and experimental methodologies to perform scientific and technologyresearch.
