THE POSITION

The Deputy Director (full-time) is on the leadership team at Meals on Wheels, supporting and reporting to the Executive Director (ED). This is a full-time position with primary duties split between staff management and human resources, as well as additional team participation expectations and covering the ED in the ED’s absence. The first 6 weeks must be onsite full time; after that, the DD may work offsite up to 2 days/week, coming onsite as needed to prioritize onsite time and support staff. NOTE: This position is cross-posted as either a part-time or full-time position depending on the candidate; you may apply to either or both positions.

·         Staff Management and Human Resources (45%)

Hires, onboards, supervises, mentors, and offboards staff, with a focus on team building and individual staff development. Works closely with the ED, bringing Reviews progress on projects with staff weekly and conducts annual reflections with input from the ED. Leads weekly staff meetings and team meetings. Develops job descriptions in coordination with the ED. Coordinates payroll and HR compliance with the Operations Manager. Tracks staff leave and time off. May in future manage payroll and benefits.

·         Fundraising & Development (45%)

Serve as the lead staff person for fundraising strategy, implementation, and evaluation across all revenue streams. Works closely with the grantwriting consultant to review and edit grant proposals and reports, ensuring alignment with mission, vision, and program impact. Builds and stewards relationships with foundation, corporate, and government funders. Leads individual giving campaigns, including direct mail appeals, online fundraising, and donor stewardship. Works closely with the Community Engagement Manager to support events and align fundraising with social media, press releases, and other external marketing. Tracks progress and creates reports on fundraising efforts for the Executive Director and Board of Directors.

 

·         Team Participation & Leadership (10%)

Participation. Each staff person contributes to the entire organization as a part of the team, including participation at our annual Celebration event honoring volunteers and annual Spaghetti Dinner & Silent Auction; staffs at least two of our tabling events alongside volunteers (currently Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, Co-op Earth Day, Takoma Park Folk Festival, and Alternative Gift Fair)). The DD will support our mission by periodically drive a route or work in the kitchen when needed. Each staff person is also expected to participate in professional development and training each year.

 

Leadership. Contributes to the development and evaluation of goals, objectives, and plans. Participates in future planning and implementation of plans. Reviews or develops policies and procedures, making recommendations to the ED. In the absence of the ED, assumes their responsibilities. May represent the organization at conferences, meetings, and other public venues.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

·         Minimum 7 years of nonprofit experience including experience working with consultants, volunteers, and boards of directors; excellent communication and relationship-building skills with diverse stakeholders; ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution in a small, growing organization.

·         Minimum 3 years managing staff knowledge of day-to-day nonprofit operations, including HR coordination, onboarding, offboarding, and payroll support. Comfortable working with an Operations Manager supporting compliance with HR tasks.
