Job Description
SUMMARY
The Marine Surveyor will supervise and perform marine inspections for one or different branches. Also performing marine surveys, including vessel draft surveys, barge surveys, on/off hire condition surveys, and product inspections for vessels carrying a variety of dry bulk cargo and petroleum-based products utilizing draft surveying techniques such as draft immersion and on/off hire surveys.
This role must develop a robust communications network in order to schedule timely draft surveys. The Marine Surveyor must adhere to SGS Health and Safety policies at all times.
JOB FUNCTIONS
- The Marine Surveyor is accountable for managing all aspects of the jobs as required and for ensuring that the Regional Manager is kept current and informed on all aspects of the activities that have any direct or indirect impact on financial, quality and
- Performing vessel draft surveys, barge surveys, on/off hire condition surveys, and product inspections for vessels carrying a variety of products, including coal, fertilizer, cement, steel and petroleum-based products
- Performing Marine Cargo inspections on a variety of bulk cargo products via vessel and/or barge draft surveys and physical/visual examination, as deemed necessary. Using accepted draft surveying techniques (draft immersion) to calculate quantities of cargo loaded or discharged from vessels;
- Conducting on/off hire Ship condition surveys, cargo Hold inspection surveys and Bunker surveys for various marine vessel, as applicable in the Trade Industry; utilizing knowledge of ship construction, stability, terminologies and routines., as well as SGS's standard inspection and quality management procedures to conduct marine survey work;
- Utilizing SGS Patented Draft Survey Tool and SGS standard methods of inspection/reporting procedures to draft survey reports, on/off hire surveys, bunker surveys. Including understanding documents for certificates of weight, certificates of analysis, and certificates of hold cleanliness and tightness, etc.;
- Providing reports to clients in standard format and in accordance with corporate quality programs, policies and procedures; Using the SIR Platform;
- Utilizing knowledge of ship construction, stability, terms and routines, as well as SGS’s standard inspection and quality management procedures to supervise conducting marine surveys;
- Using sophisticated draft surveying techniques (e.g. draft immersion) to calculate quantities of cargo loaded or discharged from vessels, taking into account any changes in weight that may take place during cargo operation;
- Overseeing cargo sampling and analysis and inspecting cargo holds;
- Using SGS specialized methods and reporting procedures to develop draft survey reports (including certificates of weight, certificates of analysis, and certificates of hold cleanliness and tightness);
- Liase with terminal and warehouse personal for execution of inspections; Communicate and give direction to the administrative/branch staff regarding inspection details
- Providing expert opinions and guidance to clients on hull, cargo damage, cargo holding cleanliness and overall risk assessment to minimize the client’s financial risks and liability;
- Utilizing sampling and analysis methods and techniques to perform product/cargo inspections and ensure adherence with safety and environmental standards.

Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Associates degree required AND
- 4+ years of experience as a Marine/Cargo Surveyor. Required
- Previous demonstrated experience in harbor operations. Required
- Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Structural, Chemical, Naval, Mechanical,Civil Engineering, Mining or related field, plus 4+ years of experience in the job offered or in an occupation which includes required
