Program and Role Summary:
Wayfinder’s Camp Bloomfield has been a haven for children and families, offering the joy of the outdoors. Unique in California, Camp Bloomfield is the only free overnight camp designed for children with multiple disabilities and blindness. We provide three distinct sessions: youth, adult, and family, catering to the diverse needs and interests of our campers.
The primary focus on the Direct Support Camp Counselor,is to provide direct one-on-one care and supervision for special needs campers who may be blind, visually impaired, or multi-handicapped in a summer residential camp setting. The Direct Support Camp Counselor’s position is to assist and empower the camper to increase daily living skills, socialization, independence, and possible behavior management. This position ensures a positive, safe, healthy, enjoyable, and educational experience for the assigned camper. The counselor teaches coordinates, and carries-out activities, guiding assigned camper in their personal growth and daily living skills. The direct support camp counselor motivates camper to participate in camp activities to the highest degree possible regardless of their level of vision and ability.
Camp Sessions
- Adult Session at Lions Camp at Teresita Pines: June 4, 2025 –June 11, 2025
- Family Session at Pathfinder Ranch: June 22, 2025 – June 28, 2025
- Youth Session at Lions Camp at Wrightwood: July 27, 2025 – August 3, 2025
Primary Responsibilities:
- Participates conducts and completes all requirements for the outcomes for each camper.
- Provides daily living skills instruction and physical assistance with tasks including but not limited to tooth brushing, showering, dressing, bed-making, toilet training, toileting, eating, laundry, and more.
- Assists in developing campers’ objectives to ensure assigned camper needs are met.
- Participates conducts and completes all requirements for the outcomes for each camper.
- Assists in all other activities and living areas as needed by the Lead Camp Counselor.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma and must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire, required.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification, preferred.
- Prior resident camp experience is desirable; at least one year of supervisory experience, preferred.
- Ability to oversee and supervise small and large groups in camp and cabin activities.
- Desire to work with children, teens, and adults who are blind, visually impaired, and multi-disable.
