About the role

In our department we value science and education grounded in the natural history of organisms, and strive to understand the patterns and processes that structure communities and ecosystems, and drive evolutionary change over all geographical and time scales. As new methods provide insight into ecological and evolutionary mechanism and function, we seek to refine fundamental concepts, integrate findings into novel theory, and address environmental challenges. As a department we are committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, justice and belonging - values that underlie all we do.

While position responsibilities vary, every member of our community is expected to foster a culture of belonging and a psychologically healthy work environment by communicating across differences; being cooperative, collaborative, open, and welcoming; showing respect, compassion, and empathy; engaging and supporting others regardless of background or perspective; speaking up when others are being excluded or treated inappropriately; and supporting work/life integration of oneself and others.

The Babonis Lab in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University seeks to hire a highly motivated Research Support Specialist to work on the evolution of cell type diversity in cnidarians (corals, sea anemones, jellyfish) and other marine invertebrates. The successful candidate will be expected to use a broad range of cellular, molecular, and functional genomic techniques in a variety of marine invertebrate taxa to interrogate the evolution and development of novel traits. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and apply protocols using cutting-edge techniques to observe, manipulate, and quantify phenotypic changes at the cell, tissue, and whole organism levels. The successful candidate will be expected to perform several project management roles, including mentoring junior members of the lab, contributing to the development of new research projects, and designing and executing new experimental methods. The successful candidate will also provide other aspects of technical support including equipment maintenance/support, ordering, and contributing to the writing of grant proposals and scientific publications.

This will be a full time, two-year appointment starting on 1/1/2025.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Must have a Master’s degree and 3 to 5 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination.
  • Must have demonstrated expertise in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, and embryonic development
  • Must have demonstrated experience with functional genomics, genome editing (including CRISPR/Cas9 technology), gene delivery techniques (e.g. microinjection, electroporation, transfection), and DNA and RNA sequencing and analysis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree and 5 to 7 years of relevant research experience
  • Demonstrated experience with aquatic invertebrate animal husbandry
  • Well-organized candidate with strong leadership skills
  • Lab management experience

No visa sponsorship or relocation assistance provided.
