JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
We are seeking one undergraduate student in Forest Resources and one undergraduate student in Wildlife and Fisheries Science to assist fieldwork during the 2025 summer season. The selected students will work as crew members for a multidisciplinary research project related to Carbon Stewardship and Bird Habitat in central Pennsylvania. As part of this project the students will have the opportunity to develop a personal capstone project.
Duties and responsibilities may include 1) mapping, measuring, and identifying trees, plants, seedlings, and other forest ecology techniques; 2) developing forest inventories; 3) developing point count bird surveys and using autonomous recording units (ARUs) to identify bird species; 4) using GPS and other forest survey equipment; and 5) working outdoors in various beautiful locations throughout central PA.
Qualifications: The candidates must have knowledge of basic forest measurements, basic forest ecology and silviculture, a willingness to be outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, and work in a team with other students and a research technician. Ideally, but not required, the candidate will have previous experience working outdoors identifying trees, herbaceous plants and birds (by song and sight) in Pennsylvania forests.
This job requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid US driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
