  • Salary: $22.42/hr. - $33.30/hr.
    • Night Differential - $2.25
    • Evening Differential - $1.65

The ED Technician (ED Tech) is responsible for direct patient care and clerical functions in the Emergency Department and assists in the care of Emergency Department patients under the direction of registered nurses and medical staff. This dual role position incorporates the roles of a Nursing Assistant (NA-C) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with the operational coordination responsibilities of a Health Unit Coordinator (HUC). You will perform direct patient care tasks, procedural assistance, point of care diagnostics, and clerical functions. This position helps to facilitate and support the nursing philosophy, goals, and objectives at Island Hospital and supports nurses and physicians in providing quality patient care.

 

What you will be doing:

Patient Care:

  • Transports patients to rooms/ treatment rooms, using a wheelchair or stretcher, or escorts them into the department.
  • Obtains and documents vital signs including blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate, temperature, and pain level. Places appropriate patients on the cardiac monitor.
  • Answers call lights and determines patients' needs. Assists patients as needed (dress and undress patients, assist with toileting etc.).
  • Assists licensed staff with procedures such as pelvic exams, chest tube placements, wound care, laceration repair, and closed reduction of limbs.
  • Changes linens, tidy and clean patient rooms as needed.
  • Cleans, stocks equipment and/or supplies and instruments.
  • Maintains supply and inventory in stocking rooms.
  • Performs point of care (POC) testing and charts results per protocol.
  • Performs echocardiogram (ECG) on patients in a timely manner.
  • Assists with splinting, crutch adjustment, and visual acuity testing.
  • Assists with the care of patients across the full spectrum of emergency conditions.
  • Performs post-mortem care with respect and dignity.
  • Maintains working knowledge of helipad process and procedures regarding safe patient handling.
  • May assist with arranging inpatient and outpatient exams such as x-rays, labs, office appointments, cardiac testing, sleep studies, echocardiograms, consults, and coordinating with external partners for patient care
  • Obtains laboratory specimens within their training and scope.

Registration:

  • Assists with the accurate registration of Emergency Department patients in coordination with Patient Registration.
  • Provides excellent patient care within the limits of their training and scope practice at Island Health.

Communications:

  • Answers phone calls, takes messages or directs calls to appropriate person when suitable.
  • Relays urgent messages and returns calls as necessary.
  • Answers pages for physicians when indicated and relays messages.
  • Facilitates communication between physicians, nurses, patients and staff.
  • Handles all telephone calls in a friendly, courteous manner identifying hospital, name, and position/ title.
  • Responds to patient family requests.
    Demonstrates open and timely communication with patients, their significant others, and team members to ensure the occurrence of effective intervention.
  • Uses assigned communication devices.

Computer:

  • Inputs written physician orders into the electronic medical record (EMR) when necessary to expedite patient care.
  • Computer skills that include the use of the EMR and MS Office products.
  • Obtains results of tests and places on patient chart as needed.
  • Documents appropriately in the EMR. Patient

Charts:

  • Assembles patient charts.
  • Obtains previous charts and medical records.
  • Checks for completeness of patient record including consent, test results, transfer agreements, signatures, etc.
  • Copies chart as directed when patient is transferred.
