Job Summary:

JOB SUMMARY

The nurse practitioner (NP) works in collaboration with, and is an integral member of, a multidisciplinary health care team. The NP functions primarily as a hospitalist in an inpatient setting, managing the care of acute/complex chronically ill patients. The NP is typically on a service aligned team managing the patient care from step down to discharge. The NP may have responsibilities for same patient population during follow up outpatient visits. The NP has a strong foundation in evidenced based practice/education and provides an environment of safe quality care. The NP demonstrates an advanced level of medical and nursing knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsible for professional development and competency validation.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:  

The Vanderbilt CARE Team is a Multidisciplinary Team  at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt that consultations for patients that have injuries or medical presentations that may be the result of child maltreatment. The Team is available 24/7 for consultations from hospital-based physicians, child protection services, law enforcement, and primary care providers in the Middle TN and Southeastern KY. In addition, we provide education to physicians, residents, fellows, and students. We also provide education to several community agencies including CPS and law enforcement.

Clinical service to include Inpatient and Outpatient evaluations.  Inpatient consults are received from clinical teams at MCJCHV. Outpatient referrals are received from primary care providers, child protective services, and law enforcement. Associated children, siblings, or others less than 6 yrs of age in the same care of an index case, are also evaluated in the Outpatient Clinic. We are now providing a clinic for patients with Failure to Thrive.

The Nurse Practitioner will report directly to and work under the supervision of the Medical Director. This position requires Acute Care Certification.   The NP will be responsible for independent pediatric medical examinations and consultations on the inpatient service, outpatient clinic, and emergency department in collaboration with the attending physician for the CARE Team Service.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

These duties and responsibilities shall include but not be limited to the following:

  • Provide forensic medical examinations/consultations and generate consultation reports for inpatient and outpatient consults.

  • Provide follow-up on hospitalized cases and monitor post-discharge follow-up.

  • Must be available for 24-hour on-call rotation one weekend a month. Evening and weekend call may also be requested occasionally during periods when MD is unavailable due to court or vacation.

  • Respond to phone/email consultations with CPS and law enforcement.

  • Participate in Multidisciplinary Team meetings with CPS and law enforcement.

  • Attend Departmental meetings including Division meetings

  • May participate in training for APRN students

  • Participate in training and education for our community partners.

  • Provide expert testimony via depositions or court testimony per subpoena; participate in pre-filing and pre-trial conferences as needed.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Medical Director.
