Position Summary

A postdoctoral position is available in the Cao Laboratory within the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, USA. We seek a highly motivated, creative, independent, and enthusiastic scientist to further our basic and translational studies of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

We study disease-relevant cell and organ signaling pathways in IBD (including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis) using molecular and cell biology, multi-omics technologies, murine models, and human tissues. We currently have three major focuses: 1) Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) in murine IBD (Peng and Cao et al., 2023 PNAS; Cao et al., 2024 JCI); 2) Multi-omics analyses of IBD-related complications, including Crohn’s disease of the pouch (in revision at Gastroenterology) and perianal fistulizing Crohn’s disease (in preparation); and 3) Biomarker discovery for IBD therapies (e.g., anti-IL-23s).

We seek a Postdoctoral Associate or Scholar with experience in animal models of GI diseases to continue our work in functionally characterizing the impact of immune cells including ILCs in IBD. Our research program provides a highly collaborative and supportive training environment to develop and foster independent careers. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to use novel mouse models and cutting-edge multi-omics approaches to understand molecular mechanisms with direct relevance to human disease.

Trains under the supervision of a faculty mentor including (but not limited to):

• Experimental design.
• Execution of experiment.
• Data analysis.
• Manuscript preparation, with ample opportunities for presentations at local, national, and international scientific meetings.

Working Conditions

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

Salary Range

Base pay is commensurate with experience.
