Job Information

Job Summary:

The Linux Senior Systems Administrator is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing technologies for the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business (Chicago Booth).  The environments include Microsoft Windows, Linux, and VMware.  The Senior Systems Administrator keeps abreast of technology trends and information, recommends appropriate hardware and software upgrades, and serves as a systems expert and advisor.  In addition, this individual acts as a mentor for other team members and provides training as appropriate.

This is a part-time position expected to last a month.

Responsibilities:

  • Introducing and integrating new technologies into the existing Data Center environments. Implement strategy for the environment including the following RedHat Linux, Puppet, EMC Isilon/Unity storage, Veeam backup solution, Splunk, VMWare, F5 load balancers and CISCO firewalls and switches.
  • Leading special projects requiring thoughtful analysis and strategic thinking.
  • Serving as an expert and advisor to faculty, students, and staff on Booth-supported technology.
  • Automating systems to streamline server operations.
  • Analyzing alternatives, developing business cases, and presenting recommendations for technology to Booth IT leadership.
  • Promoting teamwork and collaboration within the Operations team and across Booth IT department.
  • Acting as a role model and mentor for other Booth IT staff.
  • Resolving open issues within the service level agreements related to servers and networks.
  • Answering technical inquiries and assisting users within established service level agreements.
  • Analyzing system logs and identifying potential issues.
  • Troubleshooting any reported problems.
  • Monitoring and tuning system performance.
  • Performing routine audits of systems and software.
  • Installing and configuring new hardware and software.
  • Applying operating system updates, patches, and configuration changes.
  • Creating, updating, or deleting user accounts.
  • Performing backups.
  • Documenting technical environment and system configuration.
  • All other duties as assigned.
