Job Description: The candidate will assist in overseeing the operations of the Howard University College of Medicine (HUCM) human anatomy lab including, but not be limited to, oversight and providing cadaver maintenance, ensuring and maintaining donor documentation (hospital releases, burial transit forms, death certificates), assuring the inventory of lab supplies (to include ordering), and assuring lab safety policies are up to date and followed for all courses, including medical, dental, allied health, and graduate levels. The position will also require modernization of the Anatomy Donor Program, digitizing records of registered donors and new applicants, assisting with anatomical outreach events and other clinical sessions.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Responsible for overall laboratory maintenance and safety of the anatomy lab, reporting to the Anatomical Director and Chair for these duties.
Assist in coordinating the yearly delivery, embalming, inventory and final disposal of cadavers.
Work with donor families to process donor forms for at need and advance need donations.
Ensuring necessary documentation is secured (hospital releases, burial permits, cremation releases) and maintained.
Assistance with organizing Annual Memorial Service
Developing and maintaining relationships with various community groups (ie. hospice, family service agencies and others) who have impact on the donor program.
Digitizing records of registered donors and new applicants.
Arranging for and distribution of supplies related to Anatomy Lab (gloves, tool kits, skulls, etc.) as needed.
Maintain, organize, and re-ordering of all Anatomy Lab supplies.
Coordinate and maintain the lab safety according to the lab activity manuals to include assuring policies are followed and the required reporting of injuries, the Material Safety Data Sheets and other appropriate documentation is maintained.
Report to the safety officer of the College and attend training sessions to remain up- to-date on policies and regulations.
Assist in anatomy outreach sessions, including clinical, undergraduate, high school, middle school, and other activities.
Assure the anatomy laboratory remains clean, organized, and ready for instruction.
Assist in providing cadaver maintenance, working closely with the Director of Anatomical Laboratories.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Anatomical Laboratory Director and Chair of Department.
Required Qualifications:
Previous Funeral Director and embalming experience necessary.
Skills important to this position:
- Knowledge and experience of cadaveric embalming
