Job Role Summary
The Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) Intern will support the Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD) within the Public Health Administration Division. The PHEP program is responsible for establishing local public health preparedness priorities, developing, maintaining, and testing emergency response plans, coordinating preparedness and response efforts with local, state, and federal partners, and managing public health emergencies, both natural and human-caused throughout Marion County, Indiana.
This internship provides hands-on experience in public health emergency preparedness. The intern will assist PHEP staff with maintaining operational readiness of emergency preparedness assets and equipment, and will contribute to planning, development, and implementation of a comprehensive emergency preparedness framework aligned with the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
Essential Duties
- Support operational readiness and emergency response activities for the PHEP program.
- Assist with preparation of reports, maintenance, and updating of emergency plans, standard operating procedures, and resource materials.
- Participate in PHEP program activities, including training, exercises, drills, and real-time public health response operations.
- Support procurement activities, including identifying appropriate items for purchase, obtaining vendor quotes, and compiling purchase orders.
- Assist the Logistics Manager with developing and maintaining inventory of emergency supplies and warehouse equipment.
- Support the development and execution of training and exercise activities aligned with preparedness and response requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support PHEP program objectives.
Qualifications
Education/Experience:
- Current undergraduate (junior or senior year) or graduate student in a relevant field (e.g., public health, emergency management, public administration, homeland security, or related discipline).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- National familiarity with or certification in the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS) preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) or related software applications.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure or emergency situations.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environ
