Required Degree

  • Required: Master's degree in chemistry or biochemistry

  • Preferred: Ph.D. in chemistry or biochemistry

The required degree must be completed by the start date.

  • Undergraduate teaching experience

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Preferred:

  • Minimum of five (5) years full-time teaching experience

  • A pattern of successful university teaching with undergraduate students 

  • Experience as a mentor with undergraduate and graduate students

The person filling this position should be:

  • A holder of a Masters or PhD in chemistry/biochemistry, preferably in the area of organic chemistry or biochemistry

  • A self-motivated person who can work independently, yet a congenial person who can work comfortably in coordination with a large and diverse faculty

  • A person who is comfortable with the responsibility for expenditures and budgeting

Responsibilities:

The Organic/Biochemistry Professor has specific responsibility to:

Teach chemistry lecture courses: Chem 285, and/or 351, and/or 352, and/or 384, and/or 481, and/or 584/586.

The professor will participate fully in all responsibilities outlined in the University Policy on Faculty Rank and Status: Professional at the appropriate rank of Assistant Teaching Professor, Associate Teaching Professor, or Teaching Professor.  The person filling this position carries the same privileges and citizenship expectations as all other members of the faculty.  Citizenship responsibilities include: committee assignments; involvement in the university community; involvement in the chemistry community at the regional, national and international levels; participation in faculty meetings and faculty decisions; and working as a member of the department toward the achievement of department and university goals.  Although this faculty member is not expected to develop an externally-funded chemistry research program, he or she is expected to participate vigorously in creative activities to improve the chemistry curriculum, and to demonstrate excellence in teaching, particularly at the introductory level. Participation in these activities will benefit both our students and the coordinator’s own professional development. 

A detailed description of the Organic/Biochemistry Professor’s duties as currently envisioned: 

  • Teach 5-6 courses (consisting of 8-10 recitation sections) of Chem 285, and/or 351, and/or 352, and/or 384, and/or 481, and/or 584/586.  Participate with the other Chemistry faculty in deciding issues of course content and textbook selection.  Give direction as appropriate to the students hired to teach the recitation sections.

  • Initiate and carry out creative activities in curriculum development related to the responsibilities of this position.  This could include professional development leave opportunities.  The Organic/Biochemistry Professor may seek external funding (but it is not required) and give reports or papers at national meetings when such activities contribute to the goals of this position.

  • The department chair will arrange the schedule for the coordinator to phase in teaching responsibilities during the first two years at BYU

  • Participate in citizenship assignments at the university, college and department levels as assigned.
