WORK SHIFT

Variable shifts; primarily Monday- Friday day shifts but may include PM shifts, on-call rotation and weekend and holiday rotation.

JOB SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse-Acute functions as a vital member of the healthcare team by demonstrating a customer/patient focus, effective communication, professionalism self-development, and teamwork. The individual utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive care provided to selected patient populations and their families.  The Registered Nurse-Hospital is expected to demonstrate excellent clinical, problem-solving, interpersonal and leadership skills and make decisions consistent with hospital policies, department protocols/guidelines, and the Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.

Minimum Required: Diploma or degree in nursing.

Preferred/Optional: Bachelor’s degree in nursing.

EXPERIENCE 

Minimum Required: None

Preferred/Optional: Two years’ hospital nursing experience.

Those inpatient facilities participating in the Clinical Nurse Advancement Portfolio (CNAP) clinical ladder, refer to program documents for eligibility to advance/maintain CNAP level.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES 

The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position.  Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.

Minimum Required:

  • Current Registered Nurse License awarded by the applicable state or Nurse Compact License.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of employment.  
  • Additional department-specific certifications, licenses, or memberships may be required (varies by department/location).

Preferred/Optional:

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) at time of hire.

DEPARTMENT/UNIT DESCRIPTION

The Operating Room has 16 suites and is a unit within the department of Surgical Services.

Services Provided/Patient Conditions:

The operating room provides services to patients of all ages and in both inpatient and outpatient settings. RNs perform clinical procedures in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and protocols, and as directed by provider.  This includes but is not limited to:

  • Patient Assessment
  • Foley Insertion
  • IV Starts and Discontinuation
  • Operative Patient Positioning
  • Maintaining Sterile Field
  • Role of the Patient Advocate
  • Maintaining a Safe Surgical Environment
  • Patient Education

Staffing Mix:

MMC OR is staff with a minimum of 1 Registered Nurse and 1 Surgical Technologist 24/7.  

During surgery, the perioperative RN may assume the following responsibilities:

  • Circulating RN:  Works outside the sterile field.  Responsible for managing the nursing care within the OR by observing the surgical team from a broad perspective and assisting the team in creating and maintaining a safe and comfortable environment.
  • Collaboration with multiple disciplines within the OR setting:  MDA’s, CRNA’s, Anesthesia Technicians, Radiology Technicians, Surgical Technicians, Operating Room Attendants, Surgeons, Physician Assistants,  Students, and Surgical Residents.
