Job Summary: Assists the pharmacist by filling physician orders for medications for oral, rectal, topical and injectable use; mixes IV admixture solutions as required using aseptic technique in the Laminar Air Flow hood; types labels, prepares and files charge slips and performs other related duties.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists the pharmacist in providing medication, drug information and pharmaceutical services to patients, nurses, physicians and other hospital personnel.

Notifies supervisor of all unusual incidents occurring within the hospital or pharmacy. Participates in nursing station inspections and removal of outdated medication from filling area.

Maintains inventory of supplies and reorders them accordingly.

Assists in filling prescriptions.

Processes records of medications and supplies dispensed to patients or customers, computes charges and either enters them into the computer.

Accurately fills medication carts.

Receives and stores incoming deliveries of medication and supplies.

Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement and QI activities.

Assists the pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care for patients ranging in age from newborn to the elderly. Must be able to identify and understand that there are dosage variations between newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients and know to consult with the pharmacist if any doubts or questions arise.

Maintains the Pharmacy Department in a clean and orderly manner.

Performs other pharmacy-related duties as requested or required.

Demonstrates ability to calculate figures and amounts relating to dosage calculations when filling various prescriptions ranging from the newborn to the elderly populations.

Demonstrates ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out instruction furnished in written, oral and diagram form.

Demonstrates ability to deal with problems involving several variables in particular situations.

Recognizes inappropriate dosing based in available dosage forms for various age groups.

Prepares IV admixtures and extemporaneous parenteral products under aseptic conditions.

Assists the Pharmacist with patient medication reconciliation.

Requirements

Professional Requirements:

Adheres to dress code standards; appearance is neat and clean.

Completes annual educational requirements to maintain certification.

Maintains regulatory requirements including all state, federal and CMS regulations.

Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within designated time.

Demonstrates aseptic technique and passes Low-Risk Media fill and fingertip sterility testing.

Attends annual Hospital Review and Department inservices as scheduled, completes department inservice and returns in a timely fashion.

Communicates the mission, vision, core values, ethics and goals of the hospital as well as the mission statement of the department.

Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized time system correctly.

Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.

Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments and staff.

Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.

Attends committee, CQI and management meetings, as appropriate, actively participates in the department CQI activities.

Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety and infection control.

Regulatory Requirements:

• High School diploma or the equivalent.
• One-year related pharmacy experience and/or training or graduate of certified training program/health care careers college.
• Education in all age groups ranging from newborn to the geriatric population obtained either in school education, experience of subsequent training.
• Appropriate certificates or licenses required for the position.
• Maintain good standing with the Board of Pharmacy.
