About the role

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is the world’s largest scientific membership association and one of the world’s top science publishers. The Publications Division of the ACS supports the Society’s core mission of advancing the field of chemistry and the chemical enterprise through the publication of more than 60 peer-reviewed journals focused on chemistry and chemistry-related topics, while generating revenue that funds its membership and related programmatic activities. The Division has domestic facilities in Washington, D.C. and Columbus  OH, as well as worldwide operations in a growing number of international locations including but not limited to the UK, Singapore, India, and China.

 

The Publications Division’s Global Sales organization based in Columbus, OH has primary responsibility for the Division’s revenue generation. Within Global Sales, the Open Access (OA) Operations Team is a best-in-class operation that integrates people, technology, processes, and data to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of our e-commerce portfolio. This new role requires an individual with initiative and curiosity who can collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) and develop/execute/audit processes that touch upon all aspects of the open access business.

 

To this end, the primary functional accountabilities are provided below.

  1. Works with Sales Operations in the creation and tracking of open access agreement contracts.
  2. Reads contracts and monitors license agreements ensuring documented workflows and contractual obligations are being fulfilled.
  3. Creates, maintains, and audits standard business user process documentation across products and systems that touch open access.
  4. Works closely with data analysts to:
    • Track the status of pending agreements and identifies and implements solutions for greater uptake.
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of the e-commerce program and identifying any issues of concern.
  5. Collaborates with managers, peers, and other stakeholders to identify and analyze trends that indicate problems with service, products, and systems. Leverages expertise to isolate problems and contribute to solutions.
  6. Configures system attributes in internal and third-party applications.
  7. Performs internal and third-party system business user acceptance and production validation testing.
  8. Handles the set-up operations for new journal releases.
  9. Understands all daily operational aspects of the OA Operations Team and can step in to assist during busy times and team member absences.

 

  • 4-year college degree strongly preferred; additional highly specific, relevant experience in e-commerce revenue operations will be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Strong aptitude for learning and a natural curiosity to understand how things work.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to take initiative to identify areas of opportunity in both intra and inter team processes and relationships.

Required Skills:

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to accomplish tasks in a dynamic environment while giving appropriate attention to evolving urgent priorities.
  • Unwavering commitment to customer experience, regardless of whether the customer is internal or external to ACS.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills for interacting successfully with people at different levels and from different cultures.
  • Proficiency in standard business operating systems (e.g., Microsoft Office)
  • Knowledge of and exposure to digital sales management systems (e.g. SalesForce) desired, but not required.

Required Experience:

  • 5 years of experience working with systems and applications, preferably as the business user subject matter expert.

Division

Position Summary

This position is based in the Columbus, Ohio office. ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
