ECS-500 - Survey of Early Childhood Special Education

“Teacher candidates are introduced to the identifying characteristics of disabilities, including dyslexia, in children birth to age 8/Grade 3. Teacher candidates will be introduced to the components of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to understand the identification, data collection and referral process for special education. They will identify the risk factors and purpose of early intervention through understanding the characteristics of exceptional children, including dyslexia. Teacher candidates will survey the different types of family and service plans that are developed to support students with exceptionalities through collaboration with stakeholders.”

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include equipping students with the required skill set, facilitating classroom discussions, assessing student performance and preparing students to be successful leaders in their chosen profession. Other main responsibilities include the following:

• Provide a positive example to students by supporting the University’s Doctrinal Statement, Ethical Position Statement and Mission of Grand Canyon University.

Qualifications:

• Preferred: Doctorate in Ed. Leadership, Curriculum And Instruction, Instructional Leadership, Early Childhood Ed., Early Childhood Special Ed., Special Ed., or related field.
• Minimum: Master’s degree in one of these fields AND two areas of exceptional expertise. Instructors must have a valid state teaching certification or endorsement in Early Childhood Ed., Early Childhood Special Ed., or Special Education AND five years of teaching experience in a birth-K3 inclusion or special education setting.
