About the Role
The Sr. Director of Risk Management is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the organization’s comprehensive risk management program. This includes risk financing strategies and enterprise risk management. The Sr. Director ensures risks are identified, evaluated, mitigated, or transferred effectively to protect the company’s assets, people, and reputation. This position works closely with senior leadership, insurers, brokers, legal, compliance and regulatory bodies to ensure risk oversight is aligned with business objectives and regulatory requirements.
This position is based in our Newton, MA office.
What You Will Do
Insurance & Risk Financing
- Design, negotiate, and manage the organization’s insurance programs (e.g., property, casualty, general liability, workers’ compensation, auto, D&O, professional liability, cyber, etc.).
- Partner with brokers, underwriters, and carriers to secure cost-effective coverage and favorable terms.
- Lead annual renewal processes, ensuring insurance limits and structures reflect current exposures.
- Oversee claims management, coordinating with insurers, Third-Party Administrators, and legal counsel to resolve claims efficiently.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with insurance carriers to ensure open lines of communication, enabling timely resolution of claims in the best interests of the company.
- Evaluate and implement alternative risk financing approaches (e.g., self-insurance, risk retention groups).
- Monitor insurance market trends to optimize coverage and risk transfer strategies.
Financial & Operational Risk Management
- Assess and quantify potential financial exposures from insurable and non-insurable risks.
- Collaborate with Finance to ensure accurate budgeting, reserves, and allocation of risk management costs.
- Develop strategies for risk financing, including insurance, self-insurance, and contingency funds.
- Track cost of risk and deliver recommendations for optimization.
Enterprise Risk Management (ERM)
- Develop and maintain the organization’s ERM framework to identify, assess, and mitigate strategic, operational, financial, compliance, and reputational risks.
- Provide executive leadership and board-level reporting on key exposures, mitigation strategies, and emerging risks.
- Establish risk appetite and tolerance levels in alignment with corporate strategy.
- Facilitate risk assessments, scenario planning, and stress testing across departments.
Compliance & Governance
- Ensure compliance with regulatory insurance requirements, contractual insurance obligations, and industry standards.
- Review vendor and partner contracts for insurance adequacy and risk transfer provisions.
- Partner with Legal and Compliance on regulatory filings, audits, and investigations.
Collaboration & Training
- Serve as the organization’s advisor on insurance and risk-related issues and collaborate with Safety, Loss Prevention, Operations, Legal, HR, Supply Chain and Corporate Affairs teams to anticipate and mitigate risks across business activities.
- Provide training to leadership and staff on risk awareness and insurance requirements.
- Promote a culture of accountability and proactive risk management across the enterprise.
People Leadership and Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop risk team members, establishing clear goals, workflows, and performance metrics.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and proactive risk management.
Who We Are Looking For
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required; Master’s degree or professional certification (CRM, CPCU, ARM, FRM, RIMS-CRMP) strongly preferred.
- Experience: 10+ years of progressive risk management experience, including both ERM and insurance program management; at least 7 years in a leadership role.
- Deep knowledge of insurance markets and risk financing tools.
- Strong negotiation skills with brokers, insurers, and financial partners.
- Exceptional communication skills to present complex risk concepts to senior executives and the board.
- Analytical, strategic thinker with financial acumen and problem-solving abilities.
