THE ROLE

The Senior SRE – On-Prem Packaging Specialist will develop, test, and maintain virtual appliance packages (e.g., OVA/OVF images) for deployment in customer-controlled environments. These packages will enable secure, compliant delivery of Syniti’s platform to customers operating in air-gapped, IL4/IL5, or sovereign infrastructure models.

This role is responsible for transforming Syniti’s Kubernetes-based microservices stack (~50+ services) into compact, single-tenant virtual deployments that can run reliably on a minimal number of VMs. Familiarity with lightweight Kubernetes distributions (e.g., k3s, MicroK8s) and appliance-style packaging is essential.

This role supports our Zero Trust design principles and is critical to extending platform reach into regulated customer enclaves.

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

 

• Design and build virtual appliance packages for on-prem and disconnected deployment.
• Implement lifecycle automation (patching, upgrade, telemetry) inside VM images.
• Collaborate with security to ensure image hardening (STIG, CIS) and isolation meets IL4/IL5 standards.
• Document packaging procedures and support templates for various hypervisors (VMware, Hyper-V, etc.).
• Refactor platform microservices to deploy in resource-constrained, single-tenant environments using tools like k3s.
• Contribute to CI pipelines that validate and sign image builds prior to release.
• Serve as the technical SME on packaging efforts for regulated customer environments.

WHAT IT TAKES

• Strong documentation and packaging process ownership.
• Clear understanding of secure build and image provisioning workflows.
• Ability to coordinate with compliance and secure enclave deployment teams.

Technical Skills & Experience

• 8-10 years of experience in infrastructure, cloud, or SRE roles with expertise in Kubernetes, CI/CD tooling and package distribution
• Experience packaging microservices for virtualized environments using lightweight Kubernetes (e.g., k3s, MicroK8s).
• 3+ years building or managing OVA/OVF-based appliance delivery models.
• Experience automating Linux system image configuration and patching.
• Knowledge of compliance requirements for air-gapped and classified infrastructure (e.g., STIG, IL4, IL5).
• Scripting experience in bash, PowerShell, or Python.
• Strong experience with terraform development
• CI pipeline experience using GitHub Actions or Jenkins to test and sign builds.
