Software Engineering Intern - Cloud & AI Integration

We are seeking a Software Engineering Intern to support the development of a cloud-based application that integrates with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) technologies and a large language model (LLM) component. The intern will gain hands-on experience designing and developing backend systems and scalable, secure APIs, while also having the opportunity to contribute to REACT UI development.

This internship offers a great opportunity to work in a collaborative agile environment, contributing to meaningful projects that involve real-world cloud infrastructure, AI integration, and modern application development practices.

Responsibilities:

• Support the development and maintenance of backend systems using Python and Fast API.
• Assist in building and integrating RESTful APIs to support application functionality.
• Contribute to database design and data integration work, leveraging technologies like BigQuery.
• Help implement secure authorization mechanisms for service access.
• Gain exposure to REACT UI development and contribute to the frontend interface as needed.
• Collaborate with team members using tools such as Cloud Run, Cloud Storage, and Vertex AI.
• Participate in code reviews, documentation efforts, and sprint ceremonies as part of a cross-functional agile team.

This is a full time, remote internship within the United States.  Mayo Clinic will not sponsor or transfer visas for this position including F1 OPT STEM.

The incumbent must be enrolled in a bachelors, masters or graduate degree program from a college or university. Typically, this internship would occur after the student has taken most of the courses required by the degree program. Where applicable - the degree program must require an internship as a graduation requirement (or offer as a credit option).

Highly preferred:

• At least 2 years completed toward a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• Some experience in backend development using Python.
• Exposure to Fast API or similar frameworks for building APIs.
• Familiarity with cloud technologies such as Cloud Storage, BigQuery, or Cloud Run.
• Understanding of RESTful API development and integration.
• Interest or experience in REACT UI development.
• Strong problem-solving abilities and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment.

Nice to have:

• Exposure to Google Cloud Platform services.
• Interest in AI or hands-on experience with Vertex AI, Gemini, or other AI tools.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines or containerization tools like Docker.
• Experience with frontend development using REACT and modern web frameworks.
