North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customers’ mission. Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.
Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS.
The National Security Engineering Division (NSED) has an opening for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support high explosives engineering applications. This position reports to the Energy Manipulation Technology Group Leader.
This position may require the employee to have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and/or weekends, work remotely, and travel to various locations away from LLNL to accomplish goals. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.
Essential Duties
-Provide advice and assistance in developing plans to meet long-range program vision.
-Provide technical leadership in developing and implementing plans related to the design, fabrication, transportation, and experimental test of assemblies containing various energetic materials.
-Provide advice and assistance to LLNL management on ongoing work related to energetic materials.
-Mentor and train newly hired and early career scientists and engineers on project elements needed for the safe and successful conduct of experiments and projects.
-Participate in staff meetings, technical reviews, and other meetings in preparation for NNSA Program Management and external committee reviews at LLNL.
-Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
-Possess expert level knowledge in energetic materials science and engineering, including in the areas of formulation, pressing, casting, machining, radiography, and quality assurance.
-Possess expert level knowledge in regulatory requirements related to energetic materials safety, handling, and transportation (including DOT requirements for transport on federal roadways).
-Possess subject matter expertise in institutional practices, policies, and requirements related to the design, fabrication, handling, and use of assemblies containing energetic materials, including institutional review processes, and the documentation required to satisfy institutional or organizational requirements.
-Possess expert level knowledge in work authorization tools, practices and policies related to energetic materials and adjacent hazards.
-Possess extensive experience participating (and leading) the successful design of experimental assemblies containing energetic materials.
-Possess extensive experience collaborating and coordinating with other DoD and DOE sites on energetic materials formulation, fabrication, and transport.
-Possess expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to present, explain, and advise senior management.
