Senior Software Engineering Manager, Data Platform
IonQAbout the role
IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.
Our quantum computers generate huge amounts of data — and it turns out we can use this data to make our systems even better. We are seeking an enthusiastic Senior Software Engineering Manager who is passionate about data engineering and machine learning to lead our Data Platform engineering team. You will help build high quality, scalable, and resilient distributed systems that power our data pipelines. You’ll be responsible for leading the development of key components of our data platform while collaborating with experimental and theoretical physics teams. Help us use data to build the world’s best quantum computers! You'll focus on developing, maintaining, and setting the vision for systems that enables IonQ engineers, scientists, customer success staff, and product managers to understand what our systems are doing, and why.
Responsibilities:
- Own and develop the data platform roadmap by collaborating with your counterparts in product management, engineering, and sales
- Guide your counterparts in identifying and instrumenting high-impact KPIs that can provide a solid foundation for data-driven decisionmaking across the business
- Enable cross-functional data science and reporting, as well as ML pipelines
- Build derived canonical datasets from the raw data to simplify and speed up analytical queries and make analytics accessible to less technical audiences
- Establish and lead the team's standards, tooling, and processes, including design reviews, code reviews, and brainstorming sessions.
- Ensure reliability and efficiency of the data platform
- Provide recommendations on cost-avoidance and optimization of cloud environments
- Champion data governance structures that ensure adherence and adoption of data policies
- Create impact at all levels of the organization as torch-bearer for data platform engineering principles
- Drive consistency and documentation across our data stack
- Serve as a player-coach for the team by contributing technically, architecturally, and programmatically
You’d be a good fit with:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Physics, Data Science, or related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 13+ years of professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Hands-on experience with public cloud environments (AWS, GCP) using Kubernetes, Docker, and IaC tools like Terraform
- Hands-on experience in streaming (e.g. Kafka, Clickhouse), production data stores (e.g. Postgres, DynamoDB, Redis), or analytics systems (e.g. Snowflake, Iceberg) at scale.
- Broad knowledge of database technologies, including SQL and NoSQL (e.g. PostgreSQL, InfluxDB, MongoDB)
- Experience with ETL and orchestration tools like Airflow
- Experience with BI tooling like Tableau, Looker, or Superset
- Previous experience at a hyper-growth startup, and ideally one with a mixed portfolio of hardware and software products
- Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to partner and align with external product, sales, and engineering teams
- Sound project management, analytical skills and ability to establish metrics to measure and drive a high return on investment
You’d be a great fit with:
- MS or PhD in Data Science, Computer Science, Physics, Quantum Information Science, or a related degree
- 10+ years of technical leadership and people management experience
- 3+ years of managing distributed teams
- A background in quantum computing and/or quantum information science
- Experience with performance tuning, identifying performance bottlenecks, and implementing performance optimizations
