What You Will Do
The Composite Engineering Intern position in Compression Systems Engineering is targeted at college engineering students who want to enter the high technology, fast-paced world of composite design and manufacturing.
The individuals will be part of a growing team responsible for the design and development of composite hardware to meet the ever-increasing performance demands of military and commercial aircraft jet engines. Development occurs while working side by side with Pratt & Whitney Composites Engineers on component and rig designs. You will spend part of your internship in our development lab, getting hands-on experience with the manufacturing of advanced composite designs. At the conclusion of the internship, students will be presenting their results to high level managers and executives as part of their progression development in becoming a full time Composites Engineer.
This internship position will be based out of Middletown CT but time will also be spent in our composites development lab in East Hartford CT.
Key Responsibilities
- Experience using engineering tools (Teamcenter, NX CAD, ANSYS, etc.) to solve real-world problems
- Material selection, determination of laminate architecture, creation of solid models, and design of sub-element components for structural testing; assist in manufacturing process development and ensure the manufacturability of component designs.
- Provide analytical support for preliminary & detailed design, through development, validation, certification, manufacturing and operational service.
- Support of the existing fleet and development engines.
- Develop computer and simulation-based methods and processes that support engineering productivity and throughput.
- Document and present results to management and external customers.
Qualifications You Must Have
- Enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate engineering degree studying Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field.
- The candidate must be a U.S. citizen or a Permanent Resident Alien
Qualifications We Prefer
- Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Experience with any of the following is a plus:
- NX, FiberSIM, TeamCenter
- ANSYS, NASTRAN, Abaqus, LS-DYNA
- Hypermesh, PATRAN, ProStar
- Mechanical properties testing, structural testing.
- Knowledge of composite design and analysis technology preferred
- Non-destructive testing methods for composites.
- Hands-on composites manufacturing experience using hand layup/autoclave, compression molding, or resin transfer molding techniques.
- Knowledge of advanced textile design and manufacturing methods.
