Position Specific Summary

The Transportation Administrator on assignment as Deputy Director position at the City of Tucson’s Department of Transportation & Mobility is responsible for overseeing the planning, development and management of transportation systems including the infrastructure within a jurisdiction or organization. This position will be leading a team, managing budgets, and ensuring compliance with transportation regulations and safety standards.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Director of Transportation. This position exercises supervision over transportation personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists the director in planning, implementing, directing, and managing all functions and resources of the department to achieve the strategic objectives of the department and the City in an efficient and effective manner. Acts in the director's absence by attending meetings, making decisions, providing department leadership, handling emergency responses, risk management, and ensuring operational efficiency.

  • Participates in implementing department vision and assists in leading the department for maximum employee productivity and morale through hiring, disciplining, evaluating employee performance, investigating, and resolving grievances and other human resources actions. 

  • Develops and administers the departments budget with staff assistance. Implements and evaluates staff department policies, projects, and programs. Analyzes organization and community needs, analyzes trends, reviews statistics and opportunities and communicates information to the director.

  • Develops strategic partnerships and contacts with community representatives, external agencies, and other organizations to develop a sense of relevant issues facing our community and to respond as a representative of the City. Ensures that department operations conform with local, state and federal governmental regulations, worker safety and other applicable rules and requirements. Integrates new technologies and addresses complex transportation issues.

  • Supervises direct reports in disciplines, schedules, evaluations and promotions, training, professional development, workloads, provides guidance, reviews work and approves projects. Participates in hiring and selection process as needed. Manages administrators, managers and including the divisions of Engineering, Planning & Programming, Transit, Parking and Real Estate.

  • Serves as liaison for the department and local media; attends meetings of professional societies and speaks before professional and civic organizations on varied phases of transportation programs and projects. 

  • Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.
