About this opportunity:

The Commercial Staff Engineer role will play a leadership role in providing best-in-class commercial expertise to continuously improve the profitability and business performance of the Toledo Refinery. This position will provide recommendations into the Planning and Scheduling team priorities, objectives, processes and strategic direction as a subject matter expert.

The Commercial Staff Engineer is a recognized expert and advisor to stakeholders and leadership within the organization. As such, they will lead an effort to upscale and continuously improve commercial acumen and skill level of the planning and scheduling staff. The role will develop training program materials and be responsible for training and ongoing coaching sessions across the refinery, and specifically for the Commercial Planning Engineers and Product Scheduler/Blenders.

This role will develop and own commercial decision-making processes that provide key inputs into setting priorities for the Operations (24/7 and Asset) and Engineering teams. They will also coach and mentor the refinery Commercial Planners to improve their ability to take ownership of these processes.

Additionally, the role will lead the strategic effort to develop new Commercial processes for the site that functionally improve the interface between the Toledo and corporate Commercial teams. The role will also lead the development of long-term strategic plans in support of both Turnarounds and the Ohio System synergy initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for driving value by developing the commercial acumen of the Planning & Scheduling team through creating and implementing new processes that fully integrate Toledo into the CVE commercial structure

  • Create and drive the long-term strategic plan, owned and driven through this role through individual contribution and mentoring and coaching of the site commercial team

  • Develop and implement best LP and commercial practices, support development of commercial staff, support full integration of Toledo into the CVE commercial process, and support the overall refinery and Ohio System synergistic initiatives

  • Develop plans and training programs that improve the commercial acumen of the planners and blender/schedulers

  • Provide one-on-one training and mentoring to drive continuous improvement of the commercial team’s skill set

  • Working with Trident, provide input into the 0-4 VCOP “to be” process development to drive best in class outcome

  • Develop new Toledo commercial processes that flange up with the new 0-4 VCOP planning process

  • Develop processes that support best in class hydrocarbon plan development

  • Provide daily input and mentoring to commercial staff to facilitate best in class communication of hydrocarbon plan to 24/7 team

  • Drive continuous improvement process for LP development

  • Lead development of Ohio System synergy opportunities in conjunction with corporate BD team to insure alignment between Toledo and corporate objectives

  • Develop and drive implementation of commercial opportunities between refineries to add value during major (TAR) outages

  • Lead the development and communication of the annual refinery long range volume plan (LRP) to Cenovus management

  • Lead the development of the 10-year plan that maximizes annual gross margin by

  • Driving optimal crude and product slates

  • Saturating key constraints

  • Minimizing impact of maintenance and turnaround events through reduced frequency and timing

  • Develop and communicate mid-range TAR hydrocarbon plans in support of site NaviTrack objectives

  • Provide commercial support to BD to aid in evaluating projects

  • Collaborate with engineering and asset teams to develop an optimized hydrotreater catalyst plan

  • Provide support to commercial crude and product schedulers and backfill for the refinery in-month planner

Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering preferred

Experience

  • Minimum 12 years refinery experience both in technical and commercial settings required

  • Broad commercial experience both within a refinery and corporate supply environment. Expertise on crude supply logistics and trading, product marketing and logistics, and deep understanding of refinery economics. E
