LifeSouth Community Blood Centers is currently seeking an individual for a Part-time Cord Blood Laboratory Assistant position in Gainesville, FL. This position is responsible for performing routine laboratory tasks in compliance with organizational policies and procedures related to processing blood specimens and components, including preparation and transport of blood specimens and components. This position performs tasks that support the Cord Blood processing staff in their performance of duties.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to)
- Receive, organize and send specimens and tubes to the LifeSouth laboratory
- Ensure specimens and accompanying testing forms are labeled properly and acceptable for testing; investigate related sample specimen or paperwork problems
- Separate and mail (or fax) all report forms to the appropriate personnel according to established guidelines
- Maintain, monitor and restock inventory or supplies and order replacements
- Prepare and label biohazard containers for disposal
- Perform quality control duties on Cord Blood equipment as necessary and confirm that temperature remains within acceptable limits
- Transport patient specimens and blood components
- Perform cleaning and maintenance of Cord Blood related equipment under supervision
- Assist with storage or retrieval of cord blood units (CBUs) from liquid nitrogen freezers and stored samples from freezers or refrigerators
- Manufacture Cord Blood collection kits
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid driver's license. Must meet and maintain LifeSouth driver's eligibility requirements
- Excellent teamwork skills
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Ability to organize and manage time effectively
- Ability to follow moderately complex oral and written instructions
- Must be able to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or craw
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 55 pounds
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred
- Previous laboratory experience preferred

LifeSouth Cord Blood Bank is a community-based public cord blood bank that collects and stores umbilical cord blood for the purpose of clinical cures and research in the field of stem cell transplantation.
