Description
The Director of Biomedical Engineering provides strategic and operational leadership for biomedical and clinical engineering services across the health system. Reporting within the Digital / Health Information Technology division and maintaining a direct reporting relationship to the Corporate Director of Interoperability and Development, this role bridges the operational management of medical device services with the organization's broader digital transformation agenda.This Director leads a team that includes the Biomed Services Strategist, Biomed Service Analyst, Biomed Program Manager, and our GE Support Services vendor partnership, ensuring cohesive execution across service operations, capital equipment lifecycle management, and growth initiatives. Drawing from established RACI accountabilities, the Director holds primary accountability for maintenance and repair strategy, capital planning through the Prioritized Equipment Replacement Plan (PERP), contract administration, quality and patient safety, inventory management, and RTLS administration — while consulting closely with the Director of Interoperability on device integration and cybersecurity matters and collaborating with corporate capital planning on strategic equipment decisions. *Local to Atlanta metro area, or able to relocate.* RESPONSIBILITIES: Strategic Leadership & Capital Planning:- Consult with the Corporate Director for Healthcare Capital Equipment on planning development and execution of the Biomedical Engineering Prioritized Equipment Replacement Plan (PERP), holding primary accountability for capital planning decisions.
- Partner with the Corporate Director of Interoperability & Development to align biomedical engineering strategy with enterprise Digital initiatives.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on medical device lifecycle management, informing long-term investment and standardization strategies.
- Hold accountability and co-responsibility for Maintenance & Repair (M&R) strategy alongside GE Support Services and the Biomed Service Strategist.
- Oversee execution of M&R activities ensuring device uptime, safety, and reliability across all inpatient, clinic, and ambulatory settings.
- Manage contract administration and invoice processing for GE and other service vendors; serve as the primary Accountable party for both functions.
- Lead escalation response as the primary Point of Contact (RA) and ensure Accountable oversight of Root Cause Analysis (RCA) activities with GE and Biomed Strategist.
- Maintain accountability for Quality and Patient Safety across biomedical operations, working in coordination with GE Support Services and the Biomed Service Strategist.
- Ensure compliance with The Joint Commission, CMS, and all applicable federal and state regulatory requirements for medical device management.
- Develop and enforce policies and procedures related to device safety testing, documentation, and performance monitoring.
- Hold primary accountability for inventory management, working collaboratively with GE Support Services and the Biomed Service Strategist on execution.
- Accountable for RTLS Administration; ensure accurate device tracking in partnership with the Biomed Service Strategist and Analyst.
- Consult on location and loss management activities; lead end-of-life planning and decommissioning processes.
- Consult with the Director of Interoperability and Development — who holds primary accountability — on product integration with EHR and clinical IT platforms.
- Serve as an Informed stakeholder on technical due diligence and cybersecurity security reviews for networked medical devices.
- Support alignment to medical device interoperability standards including HL7, FHIR, and IEEE communication protocols.
