Job Description:
The Associate Director of Special Populations will report to the Executive Director of Special Populations and play a critical role in advancing the mission of Louisiana State University to enhance student success and retention, particularly among Pell Grant recipients and underrepresented student groups. As the university strives toward its goal of AAU membership, this position will support the Executive Director in providing outreach, guidance, and intrusive advisement to increase retention and graduation rates. The Associate Director will also co-manage key programs, including the Pre-Scholars Academy (PSA), PSA Residential Program, all Student Success Student Employees, and other student support initiatives.
Operational Leadership & Team Development (40%)
- Recruit, train, and supervise up to 80 student employees in various roles related to student success, including peer advising, academic support, tutoring, and resource navigation. Serve as a mentor and resource for student workers, fostering leadership, accountability, and a commitment to service.
- Develop, manage, and implement a comprehensive student staff training and retention program aligned with university goals, equipping student workers with the skills needed to serve as peer advisors to help lessen caseload burdens for both students and professional advisors.
- Train student workers to provide academic coaching, facilitate workshops, lead study groups, and assist with navigating campus resources such as advising, financial aid, and career services. Provide ongoing professional development to ensure student workers are well-equipped to offer peer support and guidance to fellow students, contributing to retention and success outcomes.
- Manage the student worker budget, ensuring resources are allocated effectively to support training, development, and performance incentives. Regularly monitor and evaluate the performance of student workers, ensuring they are contributing to the university’s retention and success metrics.
- Supervise and provide management to a Coordinator of Special Populations by ensuring the Coordinator supports program objectives, manages day-to-day operations, and works effectively with students and staff. Provide ongoing professional development and mentoring to enhance the Coordinator's skills and leadership abilities.
- Foster a student-centric culture with clearly defined shared values aligned with the university and division’s mission.
- Assist with the management of the Pre-Scholars Academy budget. Responsible for the tracking and reconciliation of expenditures for the PSA summer program.
- Assist in tracking and reporting key program metrics, such as special population student retention rates, graduation rates, and academic performance, as well as the effectiveness of peer advising and student worker initiatives. Data on student engagement, budget utilization, and program quality will be collected and analyzed on a quarterly basis, with detailed reports provided to senior leadership each semester. This will ensure continuous evaluation and alignment with university goals for student success and retention.
Transition Program Management (40%)
- Collaborate with the Executive Director in managing the Pre-Scholars Academy (PSA), which includes but is not limited to: Serving in a leadership role as it relates to the PSA summer program.
- Supervision and Team Coordination: Recruit, hire, train, and supervise academic instructors, social integration coordinators, and support staff. Foster a collaborative team environment and conduct regular staff meetings for cohesive program delivery.
- Curriculum Development: Design and implement a curriculum that meets the academic needs of PSA students and aligns with university standards.
- Student Progress Monitoring: Track and assess student progress, providing support and interventions to ensure academic success.
